It has been demonstrated that dogs do have an extensive vocabulary as far they words they understand go. They know quite a few nouns and proper names, as well as verbs but adjectives are lost on them.
We once had a dog that was watching us clean my parents’ yard and he realized we were picking up sticks etc and putting them on a pile at the edge of the back yard. The rest of that summer, if he saw a stick in the yard, he would pick it up and take it to that pile. By the next summer he had forgotten.
We also had a cat that knew what light switches were for and how to use them.
Molly is a 11 year old English Springer Spaniel and Maxwell is a Chahuahua, Jack Russel mix, 2 years old.
Our kid’s.
Shoprat & Ranando: great! Keep it up! I love dog stories!
BZ
Shop: BTW, that light switch/cat thing? That’s VERY unusual.

We have a 9 month old female Yorkie…
As I mentioned before Ebyjo and I are going to be married in just a few days; originally we had planned for November but Daisy, our dog, was born with a potentially fatal birth defect and we had to take her to Columbus, Ohio for a top notch animal surgeon to go in and fix it…
She’s doing well, and will now live, but it was a very expensive procedure.
She literally drained most of our wedding funds, however, she was well worth it.
As a result we decided to move the wedding up a bit since money isn’t an issue anymore.
We figure simple or lavish it’s all in the good Lord’s eyes anyway.
Daisy has will be present and will wear a dress too.
Who says Gunz don’t have a heart??
Gunz,
Good for you and yes, they are worth every penny.
Gunz: many BLESSINGS to your and Ebyjo on your upcoming day! And isn’t it interesting how important our pets are to us? They have a HUGE place in our lives!

My baby Girl is a 14ish month old Black and White Dalmatian.
Her name is Birdy.
She was found wandering the streets of Tijuanna and taken in by the Baja Animal Sanctuary (She’s a LEGAL immigrant). I found her on Pet Finder. They told us she was over a year old, and well trained. Turns out she was 7 or 8 months old and not at all trained. AT ALL.
She has blessed our lives for the last 5 months. The first month she destroyed our rugs, our sofa, our guest bedroom bed, several dog beds and many toys.
Now, with just some training, love and care, although she is still scared of some people and things, (we think she was abused on the streets of TJ)she is a wonderful dog. I love her so much.
In fact, I have never in my life had such a loving dog. She will actually hug you. And she talks, sounds like a human. And she knows sit, stay, wait, stop, shake, uppy, lay down, roll over, open door, lots more.
Most importantly, when I’m out walking her, I always have a poop eating grin on my face, because she’s just such a ham! She does summersaults in the grass. People crack up!
People drive by and yell out car windows,”Hi Birdy!!!” Of course nobody knows who the hell I am. LOL.
Jenn: yeah, isn’t it funny how, when YOU are walking the dog, or you take ’em to work, or to someone’s house, YOU get instantly forgotten and the DOG is Top Star!
A rescue pet is all the better!

BZ,
Off subject.
The next time we are in Tahoma California I’ll have you and your wife out for dinner and drinks and I’ll tell you all about it.
Deal?
You’re not that far from Tahoma, are you?
Ranando: nah, actually we’re maybe 45 minutes or so away. . .sounds good.

Okay, I’ll tell you about Angel, but we actually have four dogs. Angel is a rags to riches story, though. We found her wandering around this property when we bought it 11 years ago. The illegal aliens who had been squatting out here left her and she was pregnant.
She’s part water spaniel and I don’t know what else. Long hair, with freckles on her nose and she’s black and white. She was starving half to death and was pretty close to being ready to deliver. I coaxed her with food, and after we had her for a week she delivered 7 puppies, two of them stillborn, probably because she had been living on grasshoppers and who knows what else.
She’s now a grandma and we kept one of her first litter, who also gave birth. They all live together but I don’t think Angel will last too much longer. She’s getting very old. She’s a lovely, sweet dog and she’ll be missed a lot. Like all of you, our pets are members of the family.
Yes, that only accounts for three dogs. The other one isn’t related. Sweety is a black lab and spoiled rotten, but they all are.
This is a cute idea, BZ, and a fresh break from politics. Thanks! 🙂

I deleted the above comment because when I tried to publish my first comment I got a notice that my request could not go through (or some nonsense like that). So I typed a comment explaining what happened, published, and lo and behold, my original comment showed up. I wonder what’s up with that!? Both Blogger and HaloScan get really weird sometimes.
Gayle: thanks; sometimes politics just so terribly kicks my ass and wears me down!

I currently have two rescue dogs. I did not name either of them.
Summer is a shepherd mix. She looks like a coyote. She is sweet and loyal.
Clifford is a dachshund. But is better behaved than most dachshunds.
They are very docile but still like to hunt rabbits and squirrels.
BWH: I still think that people who can take and work with rescue dogs are marvelous. . .
about 2 months ago a small rat looking dog showed up at our door. maybe a gorky? small tan medium hair……part neighborhood I guess. I have no clue what it is but my dog liked it and so did my youngest son. so we kept it.
As things were settling down with the new one, another one showed up, this ones a full golden lab. weighs 95 lbs, and is less than 2 yrs old. Well; I didn’t want 3 dogs so we found this ones owner, one week later I wake up, and the damn dog is in the back yard. The wife tells me the owner couldn’t keep it, and was going to take it to the pound. So I paying $240.00 for shots, an ear infection, eye drops and neutering/repairing the piss poor job the first vet did.
Basically the Bushwack household went to the dogs this summer…..
Bushwack: yeah, but not like you hate it; you clearly have a big heart and that is evident.

I don’t have one now because my husband is allergic but I had a beloved dog when I was little.
His name was Buddy and he was a very loyal dog. He followed me every where I went when I was in my early years. Several times my Mom lost track of me but Buddy was with me and one time she is positive that he saved me from drowning.
When I was 5 he went missing and its one of those memories that is etched in my mind. I was very sad, and we never did find him.
Dee: I don’t have a dog now either; the logistics of where I live and where my wife lives won’t allow it. She has some dogs, but we, ahem, disagree as to how the dogs should be managed and disciplined. I would like to have “my” own dog but, at this point, I just don’t, sadly, think that is feasible. I’ve never had a Lab; I’d very much like to raise a Lab up from a pup.
