Cops shoot people with knives.
Doubt me? Excellent video to watch if available: Calibre Press’ “Surviving Edged Weapons.” A review of the video exists here. You’ll never view a knife in the same way again. Guaranteed. Particularly when wielded by those ethnics hailing from a “knife culture.”
Wherever I go, I am always armed with at least one Spyderco knife (at minimum a Delica or my 9″ folding Police) and additionally, when possible, a handgun in a popular caliber of my choosing. I like my Glock, I really like my stainless Sig P239 in rear draw.
Until the TSA updates their scanning devices, I have customarily been armed on all my flights with a custom-made, highly-polished carbon-fiber knife in a nylon sheath around my ankle. I determined long ago, post 9-11, that if I’m going down, someone is going with me and they won’t be pleased with my blade embedded in their eye socket, under the chin, or thrust downwards, through the gap between the collar bone and shoulder blades to sever the subclavian artery.
In my advanced years I have determined that not only will I shoot all persons with knives who hold them in a certain specific fashion (the mark of a good knife fighter, which I shall not reveal here), I will shoot to kill juveniles who advance on me with either knives or other manners of deadly force.
Because juveniles have no concept whatsoever of mortality.
It makes them deadlier still.
Make no mistake: I would drop the hammer much more readily on a juvenile than I would an adult. And I would have a good dinner that night and sleep like a baby thereafter.
Your stupid child wouldn’t get past me with a knife or a gun. Your stupid adult might perhaps acquire a fraction-of-a-second more consideration.
There’s a REASON my department trains a “double tap” into the thoracic cavity and then one into the brain pan.
Two to the heart. One to the head. Triple tap. Body armor.

Ouch!
Geez, I HATE facing a knife! Trust me, it creeps ME out more than you.

I can’t believe that one guy is sitting up. He must be on some powerful meds.
damn!!!
i’m back on the block… not a good way to treat a brotha but damn!!! ok, i won’t trip when the cops bust a cap in a fool for swinging a knife. hell, i’m shoot too.
I know full well how devastating a knife attack can be. I wouldn’t hesitate to use deadly force on a knife wielding assailant, regardless of age.

Oh my God! What the f&$k is all that about BZ?!!! I have NEVER seen anything like that in my life. I am also surprised the fella was sitting up conscious! Whoa! Knives scare the hell outta me and they always have! It scares me when I think about people getting shanked, I want no parts of that whatsoever.
Regarding naughty children with weapons, well…you better believe it!
As to carbon fiber er devices on planes…Clever.
I’m not totally sure but I think thats going to leave a mark.
I’ll tell you all a little story about “leaving a mark.” In Fornicalia, there’s a Welfare & Institutions code numbered 5150, used primarily with persons of questionable mental states. It indicates that only two classes of professionals can place a 5150 “hold” on subject: doctors and cops. The section states, in essence, that one can be held under this statute if you are 1. a danger to yourself; 2. a danger to others or 3. gravely disabled.
I had taken this one particular young lady to a local smaller hospital twice in one week in re suicidal ideations, whereupon she took an edged weapon and made a series of radial lacerations to her left wrist. The doctor sewed her up the first time and she was taken to the Land of Oz. The second time, same doctor, he treated her identical injuries, taking great care, sutures, much time, etc. The very NEXT day she did the SAME thing again, bop, off we go to the same hospital and, oddly enough, we encounter the SAME doctor. This time he treated her wounds and sewed her up SANS local injections.
Moral? A. don’t use edged weapons and B. don’t piss off the doctors.

James: good to see ya, dude!!

I could have done without the images but it did get the point across.
I never go to a knife fight…

LOL! Good for that doctor! 🙂 I’ll bet she didn’t do it again, at least not where anyone would see her.
Those pictures… Lord have mercy!
I didn’t know they made carbon-fiber knifes so I found the link interesting. Not that I need one… if I can’t drive where I want to go I don’t go. Not because of terrorism, but by one too many close calls on airliners. I prefer to be the nut behind the wheel. 😉
That is why someone with a *sword* is to be respected. Just because it does not go *bang* does not mean it is not deadly.
Open carry of weapons with Peacebond. To put civility back into Civilization. Knives are no joke.
In the program “In search of the Trojan War” the archaeologist doing the program used a bronze short sword on a pig carcass. A single solid swing hacked about 4″ into it. Through ribs. Pig ribs are far sturdier than the human sort. That was a replica from the Bronze Age. One wonders what a titanium/molybdenum steel blade would do today… and kevlar isn’t so good against things that push cloth fibers apart, either.
Blades are no joke.
Knives are no joke.
Throwing knives are no joke.
Shurikens are no joke.
These are weapons of war from a bygone age and their utility remains just the same to this very day.
And that is even before getting to the Thai repeating cross-bow, later copied by the Chinese.
AJ: You are SO correct. In many ways, there is nothing more frightening to many, including me, than a proficient and trained knife fighter or, further, a trained and proficient swordsman.
BZ
I don’t waste time either … if they were serious about conflict resolution, they wouldn’t have pulled it in the first place…. great post… drives the point home, and we need more of that these days…
By the way, these were knife attacks in a correctional setting.

Zeppelin,
Those photos are excellent!
Until about 5 years ago, I was intensely into Filipino Kali, and related arts. Not for fancy crap, fitness, “philosophical mind, body, spirit” mumbo-jumbo Mr. Miyagi preaching, but for the purposes of finding out what’s what, and to make no pretense about the seriousness of violence. I believe most martial arts don’t teach functionalized savagery nor do they adequately prepare students psychologically and emotionally to deal realistically with survival fighting. They teach you to be nice, civilized human beings and only engage you in “pretend” martial arts. They may talk about fingerjabs to the eyes, or biting; but they don’t really delve into the physical and emotional ramifications of what that truly means and feels like…to ram your fingers into someone’s eyesocket, or to sink your teeth and rip out chunks of flesh….not just nibble.
The sober reality of knives as well as firearms were part of the school curriculum (at my primary school). There’s a saying in Kali, that in order to defend against the knife, you first have to become a knife fighter.
I have some photos given to me by a Huntington Beach police officer of a knife victim, that are similar to the ones you have here. I also have a few books, showing entrails bulging out….a forensic text called “The Medicolegal Investigation of Death” which has numerous photos from all sorts of trauma, from blunt-objects, to gunshot wounds, to knife wounds, to traffic accident victims. Very gruesome stuff.
I also have the video, “Surviving Edged Weapons”. Dan Inosanto, who is in the video, is one of my primary teachers. I trained directly under him for a number of years; but stopped altogther, about 5 years ago. Other things in my life just came along.
I still carry a Spyderco Civilian. I carry it specifically for the purposes of self-defense. I have a wooden and plastic Civilian trainer, one designed by someone at ComTEch. Since I carry a kerambit-style blade, I trained extensively in the functional use of it, from deployment under stressful conditions, to tactical application.
I find that most people just don’t think about how much damage an edged weapon can do to the human body. Your pictures get the point across very well.
At the Inosanto Academy, I obtained a knife made of micarta (sp?) in a sheath, but have never tried carrying it aboard a plane. I do choose my pens carefully to take with me on planes, looking for shapes that are conducive for purposes other than writing.
Thanks for the educational post.
Damn, Those will be some distinguishable scars, this guy will have some “ID tags” for sure…
Anyway, good post, I like the part about the “skilled” knife fighter.
bringing a knife to gun fight is less than bright. LOL
I appreciate this post!
However, I could have done without the pics… that’s just me though.
I’d sure like to know exactly what department you work for and why you carry knives on your flights. Are you some kind of cop? You seem extremely trigger happy. That’s a problem I’ve found with law enforcement in this country. The only people who would want to join “the force” are the ones who get hard-ons thinking about people submitting to guns pointed in their faces. Fuck all you cops. You betray our trust every day. Your sins will find you out just like the drug dealers you push around.
you sound to trigger happy to me man.
there’s too much frustration and anger in you.
time to find another job.your objective way of thinking is clearly not there .

Hahaha you won’t be saying that when I cut you to fuck whilst you’re sleeping!!
hi, these pictures are really graphic & i was just wondering if it’s ok to show them to my students? Here in the UK knife crime is getting worse & i want to shock the kids about the damage a knife can do. I’m not sure if it’s ok to use the pics in my lesson so thought i should ask first. Many thanks:)
