Provision is part of controversial MAP-21 bill expected to pass House

A bill already passed by the Senate and set to be rubber stamped by the House would make it mandatory for all new cars in the United States to be fitted with black box data recorders from 2015 onwards.

Section 31406 of Senate Bill 1813 (known as MAP-21), calls for “Mandatory Event Data Recorders” to be installed in all new automobiles and legislates for civil penalties to be imposed against individuals for failing to do so.

“Not later than 180 days after the date of enactment of this Act, the Secretary shall revise part 563 of title 49, Code of Federal Regulations, to require, beginning with model year 2015, that new passenger motor vehicles sold in the United States be equipped with an event data recorder that meets the requirements under that part,” states the bill.

Although the text of legislation states that such data would remain the property of the owner of the vehicle, the government would have the power to access it in a number of circumstances, including by court order, if the owner consents to make it available, and pursuant to an investigation or inspection conducted by the Secretary of Transportation.

Given the innumerable examples of both government and industry illegally using supposedly privacy-protected information to spy on individuals, this represents the slippery slope to total Big Brother surveillance of every American’s transport habits and location data.

Tracked, watched, monitored, told what to do, how to work, how to eat, what to eat, what to think, how to think, what not to think about and how to think uniformly — welcome to Your New America, everyone. Pablum for the masses!

More of the same, come November!

  1. This will be used in tracking your “carbon footprint” and if determined too large lord knows what will happen.

Just recently in the UK a woman was told by the NHS she must change her doctor of 30 years due to this very reason of her “carbon footprint” as the doctor was too far from her domicile.

Besides the obvious “health care” and “green movement” implications in this, this also goes to the UN and their “sustainable living” agenda and possible relocation plans.

    Once tracked, thrice f–ked.

  2. This should never have passed. I sold Fords a little while back in the D.C. No. VA suburbs. Through that I learned from several clients and from a Ford rep. to Capitol Hill that high security profile clients were not buying Chevys because of OnStar.

    Evidence here:
    http://gm-volt.com/forum/showthread.php?10736-How-to-disable-and-REMOVE-Onstar-gt-because-it-is-spying-on-you-whether-its-on-or-o

One reason Ford deliberately designed its Microsoft Sync package to use the client’s phone is that it can be easily cleared from the system and also not broadcast data when the phone is turned off. The encryption technology is supposedly high tech as well.

You would be amazed at the data people leave on built-in GPS/bluetooth systems when they turn in their used vehicles.
    Full phone lists.
    Address books
Home and family addresses with turn by instructions.
    Doctors, lawyers, the whole shmear.

This is a big concern. Soon you will be able to pick out the spooks (CIA/NSA employees) as well dressed individuals driving older model vehicles.
(DHS employees will all have Prius-es.)

  3. Hidden inflation. In the early 1990’s, the average new car cost 23 weeks of an average family income. Last I heard it is now over 40 weeks. Other than some electronic advances and fuel injection, none of this cost benefits the consumer. The large portion is for namby government mandated equipment. Anti lock brakes, stability control, multiple airbags, and on and on.

Of course, it is for our own good as we are to stupid to make those decisions by ourselves.

  4. dmarks: of course. We all need to be brought into line.

Christopher: my thought precisely; a roundabout way to discover new TAX STREAMS regarding your utilization and MILEAGE.

∞ ≠ ø: anyone have a nice used Zil, GAZ, Moskvitch or Volga for sale?

AOW: I would wager so; there is a large push to charge you per mile, so that you would be MANDATED to reveal your weekly, monthly or yearly mileage. The only way to accurately do this is by technology that can be remoted out of your car to receivers.

WSF: quite true. The reason that vehicles, if you’ve noticed, don’t quite get the mileage they used to even 15 or 20 years ago is WEIGHT. Federal laws mandate extra safety equipment, etc., which costs money and adds weight.

Anyone ever have a early 80s Honda CRX? They would get a consistent 40 mpg and the occasional 50. I know; I had one. Light, fast, basic, simple, reliable. And fuel EFFICIENT.

  5. Nope, not today on auto trader classics but they are categorized there.

A note for BZ and readers.

For years, I have been ADDICTED to “Top Gear”. If you have not heard of this show, you may be in for a treat. There are two versions, BBC and American. The BBC version is the only one I will watch. If you get the BBC on your cable this, IMHO, is a must see.

Here is an on topic clip from the show. Enjoy.

  7. BZ,

To keep track of our carbon footprint, I suppose.

Hell, I wouldn’t even be surprised if the federal government doesn’t start rationing gasoline — although the label “rationing” will be case aside for some BS euphemism.

  8. Don’t think that it won’t be too long when they track your speed and will automatically send you a traffic ticket in the mail. Finally, when they force everyone to give up their bank account info (as in obamacare), they will just deduct the speeding violation from you bank automatically.
