Seriously? THIS is why the public can hate cops:

In Fort Lee, New Jersey, officers have been told by their Chief of Police to hand out “summonses” for pedestrians who “Walk and Text” or “Walk and Talk.”

Seriously?

Let’s just issue a police officer or government worker to each citizen, so that more babysitting and hand-holding can occur.

People: there’s an actual penalty to pay for being stupid: it’s called injury or death.

So pedestrians walked into the street and were hit by cars?

Sounds like “culling the herd” to me.

P.S.
This apparently isn’t the first time the department has been less-than-brilliant. And I have a sufficiently-difficult time on the street already, FLPD, without hearing about your new silly move all day long from the public I encounter.

  1. Another opportunity for public displays of hypocrisy. If you don’t believe me, check out how many coppers drive around talking on cell phones.

I am sure they are not talking to dispatch, their sergeants or their beat partners either.

Just another symptom of what we have created.

  2. It’s New Jersey… The Garbage State… It may be why people in this New Jersey town hate the Police but it’s not indicative of a systemic failure…

It’s New Jersey… Look at their State Troopers, they look like Nazi Storm Troopers…

It’s New Jersey, even New Yorkers make fun of them…

    It’s New Jersey…

  3. Oh my gosh! I hadn’t heard about this.

But then again, they may have a point. There are videos on Youtube where people have fallen into rivers, lakes and even fountains at the mall for not paying attention or where they are going as they were texting on their phones.

Maybe it’s just to make people aware and quit doing that while walking, especially in a busy place like Jersey.

Not sure if I agree with ticketing a person for it, but a “WATCH OUT!” Might do the trick?

  4. NFO: yep; in combination.

Capt Schmoe: quite true. No argument with that at all. Just peek inside any new law enforcement vehicle. You’d be surprised at the amount of gurp we festoon inside and — at the same time — expect officers to operate whilst simultaneously monitoring calls for service, traffic conditions, the radio, the MDT, GPS, laptops, equipment chargers, emergency light and audio controllers, etc.

TF: never been, never want to.

Leticia: I’ve been hand-holding and babysitting people, professionally, for 40 years. You can’t fix stupid.

WSF: apparently they’re taking that axiom quite to heart.

MrC: I’m certain that’s in the works.

  5. You won’t have to have the cops issue “walk and chew gum” citations in the to anyone in the Obama economics staff. They simply can’t.

Blov: And on top of all that. they also need to drink coffee and eat donuts while driving.
