Today, Ranking Member of the House Ways and Means Committee Dave Camp (R-MI) released a letter from the non-partisan Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT) confirming that the failure to comply with the individual mandate to buy health insurance contained in the Pelosi health care bill (H.R. 3962, as amended) could land people in jail.

The JCT letter makes clear that Americans who do not maintain “acceptable health insurance coverage” and who choose not to pay the bill’s new individual mandate tax (generally 2.5% of income), are subject to numerous civil and criminal penalties, including criminal fines of up to $250,000 and imprisonment of up to five years.

In response to the JCT letter, Camp said: “This is the ultimate example of the Democrats’ command-and-control style of governing – buy what we tell you or go to jail. It is outrageous and it should be stopped immediately.”

To include:

Prosecution is authorized under the Code for a variety of offenses. Depending on the level of the noncompliance, the following penalties could apply to an individual:
• Section 7203 – misdemeanor willful failure to pay is punishable by a fine of up to $25,000 and/or imprisonment of up to one year.
• Section 7201 – felony willful evasion is punishable by a fine of up to $250,000 and/or imprisonment of up to five years.” [page 3]

And finally:

According to the Congressional Budget Office the lowest cost family non-group plan under the Speaker’s bill would cost $15,000 in 2016.

Ah yes, that good ol’ American Free ObamaKare. No penalties; no cares; no worries.

No freedom.

  5. Actually its even better than just arrested! They could fine you if you don’t get health insurance and don’t ‘pay’ the ‘penalty’ for that. Then you could receive a massive fine or be prosecuted for that lack and get 5 years in the federal pen.

    So if you are poor or even borderline and seeing jobs go away, can’t afford insurance (although you can afford treatment for minor conditions and may have a catastrophic insurance plan at low cost), and then don’t trust the government as it has been short-changing doctors for decades with Medicare… then you are too poor to afford the insurance, too poor to pay the ‘penalty’ and then get prosecuted. Your choice: be made a pauper, or go to jail where the feds have to provide EVERYTHING for you. Meals, roof over your head, clothing, medical care (and to full-time, well paid doctors!), really there is a long list of things where losing your liberty is better than having it. That is because there is a strange belief that ‘help’ from the federal government is ‘good’ because it helps the anecdotal class who are dying on street corners without medical insurance.

    And with the economy down, government saving organizations ‘too big to fail’ and joblessness going through the roof, along with the FHA, FDIC, Fannie, Freddie, SSN, Medicare all going insolvent and needing ’emergency’ funds the taxes to pay for all of that without Obamacare is already causing businesses to forecast the need to tighten their belts more to survive. Which means lower tax revenue with fewer jobs.

    Of course there will be a need for more ’emergency funds’ which will increase the debt,cause increased taxes and make things worse. All because of this cost free ‘help’ that those unwilling to use their liberty to actually give help want to get from government so that they do not have to care about their fellow man. Thus temporary security is paid for with permanent loss of liberty.

    We have forgotten Franklin.

  7. If this bill becomes law, Mr. AOW and I will be up the creek!

    At the moment, we have affordable catastrophic coverage. From what I’ve been reading, our policy wouldn’t qualify under this bill’s parameters.

    Those who have been to my web site in the past two months know that, right now, Mr. AOW needs the health-insurance coverage we have!

  9. You would think that when the DEMORATS look at the “Income” vs the “Outgoing” finances in fedzilla’s coffers they would say “Hey we may be going the wrong direction”…BUT:
    Since the purse strings are now controlled by high ranking CALIFORNIA politicians, they don’t see the facts because their issues are so much better….Sigh.

    Just what I’ve been saying since 2006, California is the now the nations business model…Sad but true.
    How’s that hope and change working out for you 10.2% unemployed? Can’t be GWB’s fault anymore when he left it was 6%, Obama ran talking about jobs and the economy….Pelosi is the controller and since that worthless bitch has been in office MORE Americans are sucking the gubmint tit than ever before…
