Impressive! And an ‘odd’ pattern to the smoke out of the stack, every 4-10 seconds a puff of blacker smoke…
Good point sir!

Every year I make it a point to watch 844 making the Frontier Days runs.
The Union Pacific steam ship in Cheyenne has occasional tours that are worth the time/effort/money. I was able to stand in the cab of 844 on one occasion.
844 now burns bunker oil. The puffs old NFO noted are probably soot.
The “Big Boy” should be ready in time for the Golden Spike celebration next year in Utah. For certain I will be somewhere to watch it go by.
After the “Big Boy” they will start work bringing the Challenger back to life. I got to see it pulling the Ringling Bros circus train a few years ago.
One of my fondest childhood memories was exploring the D&RG 2-8-8-2 Mallets based at Tabernash, CO circa 1952 and one ride from Tabernash to West Portal (Winter Park, CO). These were used as “helpers” and pushed the long freights up the grade to the Moffat Tunnel.
Man, you are one lucky guy.

Should add the diesel locomotive is there for braking power. A favorite clip to prove the point.

And you are absolutely correct about the dynamic braking added by diesel-electric locomotives.
