With the United States military fighting a protracted war in Iraq and a wide-open presidential campaign already making headlines daily, Americans of all ages are interested in current affairs and are consuming news like never before, right?
Not so, especially not teenagers and young adults, according to a report released last week by the Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard.
In fact, most teenagers and adults 30 and younger are not following the news closely at all, the report, titled “Young People and News,” concluded. It is based on a national sample of 1,800 Americans that included teenagers, young adults aged 18 to 30 and older adults.

You know my generation couldn’t care less about newspapers either.
There is a good music deficit right now. Funny. There was a lot of good stuff in the 80s and 90s. It just sort of stopped.
I wouldn’t say that there’s no good music today; it’s simply extremely rare these days. Since I don’t count “rap” as music, that cuts off a large amount of crap for me to even consider.
I wasn’t really interested in the news until I was in my mid 20’s; while many of my peers at that time remained uninterested. Odd.
BWH & JJ: I find that, when my Sacramento Bee went completely off its rails to the Left, I haven’t read a newspaper since; that newspaper was responsible for the downfall of The Sacramento Union, the newspaper that Mark Twain once wrote for. As far as music: in my opinion, with some very rare exceptions, the best American music these days is coming from Soundtracks. There is NO more “popular” music.

You’re right about young people not reading newspapers. Some even question whether that medium will be around much into the future, at least in its traditional form.

I don’t know about newspapers, but the young people I am around on a daily basis are filled with Jon Stewart, Bill Maher anti-Republican beliefs (I live in Los Angeles, Mexifornia).
