Keystone XL Pipeline: a surprise initial approval, to the chagrin of Leftists

Keystone XL oil pipeline clears significant hurdle

WASHINGTON (AP) — The long-delayed Keystone XL oil pipeline cleared a major hurdle toward approval Friday, a serious blow to environmentalists’ hopes that President Barack Obama will block the controversial project running more than 1,000 miles from Canada through the heart of the U.S.

I must admit: I hadn’t anticipated this turn of events.

Republicans and business and labor groups have urged Obama to approve the pipeline to create thousands of jobs and move further toward North American energy independence. The pipeline is also strongly supported by Democrats in oil and gas-producing states, including Sens. Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, Mark Begich of Alaska and Mark Pryor of Arkansas. All face re-election this year and could be politically damaged by rejection of the pipeline. Republican Mitt Romney carried all three states in the 2012 presidential election.

Keystone XL Pipeline Proposed RouteFor years America has provided mere lip music to the concept of an energy-independent nation.  We sit on some of the largest fields of yet-untapped natural gas.  We sit on the Bakken oil fields.  Oddly enough, our largest export these days is refined fuel — but not the unrefined oil.

We will not achieve any form of so-called “energy independence” if we continue to rely upon what I term “Conflict Oil” from nation-states that primarily dislike the United States intensely, such as ME countries, Venezuela, Nigeria, Angola and Iraq.

There is no perfect solution to oil, and neglecting to make a logical, cogent and smooth transition to other forms of energy is ridiculous.  Leftists and Mr Obama expect and want that oil shall be immediately dismissed and shunted aside.  That simply cannot be done, because the other forms of energy and much more unreliable.

Wind turbines are high pressure/low pressure dependent, and kill birds.  Solar eats valuable land and must be cleaned regularly with water — a problem in desert areas.  Powerhouses charged by water flow require reservoirs with penstocks and are dependent upon a constant flow via rain.  No Leftist will ever consider nuclear energy again.  No Leftist will consider coal or oil — Mr Obama has made it quite clear that he will do his best to kill coal and oil-fired electrical generation stations.

So what’s left?  Progressives on a bicycle with a chain connected to a generator?  They may be sadly disappointed in its inability to recharge their iPad, iPhone, iPod, iPid, iPiss and iSwear that Leftists make very little sense to me.

Step one.

Obama’s energy goals:

Obama Energy PlanExcellent insight from the Wall Street Journal:

“[I]n truth Mr. Obama’s target is all forms of carbon energy. Natural gas is next. The higher costs will ripple through the energy chain, which is precisely Mr. Obama’s goal. Only by artificially raising the cost of carbon energy can he make even heavily subsidized ‘renewables’ competitive. In general every $1 billion spent complying with an EPA rule threatens 16,000 jobs and cuts GDP by $1.2 billion — and the agency is now writing scores of multi-billion-dollar rules. Keep in mind that last month the Administration quietly raised the ‘social cost’ of carbon by 60% in a regulatory filing related to microwave ovens. That means the EPA can jack up costs by 59.99% and still justify them by claiming the higher benefits. … The Americans who will be harmed will have to console themselves with 99 weeks of jobless benefits, food stamps and ObamaCare.”

His his policy in a nutshell: drive up costs, force a socialized paradigm, enslave us to Conflict Oil.

And on Monday, July 1st, Fornicalia faces an additional 3.5 cent tax per gallon of fuel, making the state the highest-taxed in the nation at 71.5 cents per gallon.

A war on coal is exactly what’s needed,” says the Obama Administration.

Evidence, every day, of Mr Obama and Leftists purposely attempting to bring down the nation.

Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez is dead; what next?

Hugo ChavezFrom the UKDailyMailOnline:

Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez has died in hospital at the age of 58 after developing a severe respiratory infection during his battle with cancer.

The country’s vice president Nicolas Maduro, surrounded by other government officials, made the announcement during a national television broadcast tonight.

He said that the long-standing president died at 4:25pm local time, using the broadcast to call for  ‘unity, tranquility and understanding’.

The death could trigger an election to determine who will replace the socialist leader, after his illness prevented him from taking the oath of office after being re-elected last year.

A government spokesman had earlier said that the far-left leader, who has held control in the country for 14 years, was in a ‘very delicate’ condition in hospital.

The news comes just hours after Mr Maduro announced that two U.S. Embassy officials were expelled for meeting with military officers and planning to destabilise the country.

But here comes the spin and attack on America:

Maduro also said there was ‘no doubt’ that Chavez’s cancer, which was first diagnosed in June 2011, was induced by foul play by ‘the historical enemies of our homeland’.

Cindy Sheehan, Harry Belafonte and Sean Penn are all bursting with tears today.

There’s the spin.  So what is the future of Venezuela?

Frankly, I have only one care or concern about Venezuela and it has to do with oil.

US Oil Sources

1. Canada
2. Mexico
3. Saudi Arabia
4. Venezuela
5. Nigeria
6. Angola
7. Iraq
8. Algeria
9. United Kingdom
10. Brazil

These are the top ten sources of foreign oil for the United States, listed in terms of amount, from greatest to least.

Venezuela was already a destabilized country in the southern hemisphere.  And our number four oil source.  Citgo in America is 50% owned by Venezuela.

I couldn’t care less about Chavez.  But my question: how will Venezuela go now?  Further left?  More anti-American?  And how will that affect oil production and therefore gas availability in the United States with gas prices already at major highs even before the annual “Summer price gouging”?
