US Gun Sales: Women Are 2/3rds of New Purchasers

Whilst listening to the Tom Sullivan radio show on Wednesday, one caller named Craig from Yuba City made a salient observation. He owns a mechanical shop which works on engine blocks; he builds guns on the side. He noted that, at gun shows he attends, fully two-thirds of gun sales are now from women.

He stated his experience is such that the women making purchases are typically professionals such as teachers or nurses, who are fearing for their personal safety — and only very recently began to fear for themselves in terms of economic and societal conditions.

There is evidence to support that thought. Here also.

Do you find this trend to be true in your area?

To my female readers and commenters: do you own a firearm, and/or are you considering the purchase of one in the future? If so, why or why not?

  1. My wife has her 20 ga shotgun, her .357 Magnum, her .40 XD Sub-Compact and an old 9 shot H&R .22 revolver loaded with CCI 22 LRHP Stingers…

    That’s a well-heeled spouse!

I have MY XD-45 Tactical w/ 4 magazines backing it up, 2 12 ga high capacity riot guns, a .357 Model 586 for backup and a couple of other toys

  2. I am a gun toting female, a mother and a nurse. I have owned a gun for the past 20 years, at first to protect myself when I was living alone and working the night shift. I was taught to use a gun by my former husband and he was a very good instructor! I am a very good shot and would not hesitate to use my Lady Smith if I felt personally threatened.

  3. Very soon I’ll be purchasing. I’m waiting for a buddy of mine to let me know when the next gun show is.
And I want one before our lovely gov’t says I cant have one.
    Plus, they’re sexayyyyy. 😉

  4. Yes and yes.

Got a couple and I’m thinking of buying another one.

The why is obvious, isn’t it? Tough times are coming.

  5. My apologies to readers: whilst ticking away in Blogger’s Dashboard I hit the wrong button under comments and killed the ability of ANYone to comment.

Thanks for sticking with me and making comments then wondering “what the hell happened to my comment?”

I think I’ve fixed that problem.

  6. Similar circumstance at the last Chantilly show, I saw a numer of women both by themselves and with other women actively shopping for weapons and asking about training.

  7. Most of my female friends are well-armed. They armed themselves (in some cases, fortifying their already-existent arsenal) immediately following the election of BHO.

About lost comments, go to the “Settings” tab in Blogger dashboard, click, and up will come a hot link for comments to moderate.

  8. Yes I own firearms, have for most of my life. Yes I have a concealed carry permit, have had for many years. Do I plan on purchasing more guns, not in the near future.

My hope is that these women are actually buying a gun big enough to get the job done, and not just some little gun that looks cute.

Having a gun doesn’t do anyone any good unless they have it with them at all times.

  9. Ok, so what I said was…
I plan on purchasing a gun very soon. I’m waiting on a buddy of mine to tell me when the next gun show is and we’ll go together.

And I’ve wanted one for awhile but never followed thru. I’m following thru now in case the current Banana Republic of a gov’t decides we cant have one anymore.
    And they’re sexayyyy! ‘)

  10. I am Very proficient, and with very large caliber – I don’t care for small or “pink”. We look, but right now aren’t planning on new purchases, as each one should be kept “well-fed”, and since the 2008 election, ammo has been very difficult to obtain in our locale.

  11. Ammo and guns are quite plentiful here…

I have been responsible for the sale of 3 XD-40 Sub Compacts in the last 2 days, got some free mags for the .45 and my .40 for the effort…

  12. Time for a good old self-defense handgun for my lady… she likes the older Walthers being a Bond fan and all. Still the Mauser HSc looks fine or an old Baretta 34. Also need a plinking rifle, see what I can get at the local shop, probably a Marlin 60.

Seeing how finances work out, but still want a Para-Ord high cap in 45 ACP. Standardizing on a few calibers to keep things organized and streamline purchases. I do find ways to keep myself busy.

  13. Ammo?
Three months now I’ve had 600 rounds of .45 ACP on back-order from Cabela’s.
The delay is a sign of the numbers of folks that “get it”.
Individual boxes of 50 rounds are frequently available at Wally World in various calibers and I snap them up whenever I’m there.
And ladies, I agree with the suggestions of others above…
    Go no smaller than 9mm!

  14. I get all my ammo mail order. Best prices can be found through the online ammo pricing collection sites:

    AmmoEngine
    and
    Ammo Now

There are some very good places with flat rate shipping, like Graf & Sons, which is $5 for as much as you can order, any size order.

Really, I thought these were well known search sites for ammo. A bit of duplication between the two, but you can reliably find some of the lowest cost per round ammo for a wide variety of calibers and AmmoNow does shotgun ammo, too.

  15. My wife likes to borrow my Smith and Wesson .380 but really I don’t know if it’s appropriate for her to wield a gun. I found some ammo for sale and she wanted to come with me to buy it. I don’t think so.
