The Powderkeg At Our Border

This year, through mid-November, there have been 4,300-plus drug-related deaths in Mexico, compared with 2,500 in 2007. Edgar Millán Gómez, who oversaw the joint efforts of the army and federal police, was assassinated in May in his home in Mexico City. Roberto Velasco Bravo, a federal chief of criminal investigations, was shot in the head a week earlier. The narcotraficantes have infiltrated the highest levels of law enforcement, including, allegedly, Mexico’s principal link to Interpol and its former senior drug czar. Mexico, once again, is battling the ever powerful gangs. “It has been a fierce bloodbath,” says Felipe González González, president of the Senate public security commission and former governor of the central state of Aguascalientes. “We have more dead than you have in Iraq.”

A Texas Republican said, about Mexico and the execrable Meridia Initiative:

What about help from the Mérida plan? “The money is going to the wrong side of the border,” contends Congressman Ted Poe (R–Tex.). “With the infiltration of law enforcement and so many corrupt officials in Mexico, we don’t want that equipment used against us.”

More pointedly, because of all this instability, the US military is now warning of a possible massive disintegration of Mexico with, naturally, concomitant dire consequences for America:

EL PASO – Mexico is one of two countries that “bear consideration for a rapid and sudden collapse,” according to a report by the U.S. Joint Forces Command on worldwide security threats.

A report from the USJFC places Mexico’s instability right alongside that of Pakistan. Ponder that for a moment, if you will. To continue:

The Mexican possibility may seem less likely, but the government, its politicians, police and judicial infrastructure are all under sustained assault and press by criminal gangs and drug cartels. How that internal conflict turns out over the next several years will have a major impact on the stability of the Mexican state. Any descent by Mexico into chaos would demand an American response based on the serious implications for homeland security alone.”

Also consider this: how much finger-pointing, sphincter-clenching and butt-covering will ensue should Mexico explode, literally, in our faces? And how much better we’d be had the border fence been created years earlier and our immigration laws actually enforced all along?

This is a powderkeg that is ready to detonate on every level imagineable: politically, economically, societally.

  1. Perhaps. But Mexico is the closest explosive item to this country, rife with corruption, immorality, public evil, with little to support or speak or write for authority.

If Mexico explodes, we WILL be hurt and we WILL feel it.

We had numerous prior opportunities to prepare for this on other levels and for other reasons. We could possibly be forced to, literally, pay the piper for our prior foolishness — in terms of American deaths.

  2. Yeah I just wrote a little blurb about this. Although I’ll admit that I didn’t go into as much detail. Great post.

If you think the present 15-20 million illegals are a problem wait till that place implodes. It’s going to take solid military efforts with real ammunition to stop it.

Otherwise, learn to speak spanish and arm yourselves. I see a perfect storm coming. Mexico disintigrating, The dollar going the way of the Confederate dollar, and a rising tidal wave of war in the middle east.

That high pitched whining sound is the American dream starting a flat spin.

  3. If this country had really been waging our “War on Drugs”, the cartels wouldn’t exist as they do today. They would be miniscule in comparison. Give them the size market we did and then wonder why they grew so strong?? Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that one out.

We might want to start thinking about tackling the problem pretty soon and I don’t think the DEA is the right answer. They’re not big enough or strong enough to do what needs to be done. I see the Marines getting envolved in this one sooner or later.

  4. And who was it that was saying where the next COIN deployment would be? Way back during the campaign, too… not that anyone ever wanted to ask that question of those wanting to be President.

Welcome to the world in which we now learn about COIN up-close and personal and we can stop ragging on the Iraqis for being so turned around as to have a problem like this. This is in America.

And we, in theory, have a functioning society and government… what is OUR excuse for letting this happen?

I really don’t hope we get to the day when Iraqis will have to come to rescue *us* and teach *us* about democracy and accountability. At the rate we are going, however…

  5. Mr. Z – I hate being right on things like this. Getting the strategy right for what was happening in Iraq I could feel good about… but this? Ugh.

The Left has zero answer for this, save to create more chaos and disorder. And if they try to create order, well, they only have one way to do that and I don’t like how that has played out in history in France, Germany, Italy, Russia, China, Cambodia, Cuba, and on and on. There is only one word that comes from this strange idea of a post-nationalist state: Empire.

A lovely, multi-culti, discriminate against civilized people Empire that collapses on itself into pure barbarism. Russia nearly did that with the criminal oligarchs in the 1990’s and now has a ‘solution’ that is totalitarian in nature put in place, again. One that is in bed with the criminal enterprises. We already hear about how we are supposed to ‘understand’ criminals *first* and only uphold citizens rights when it makes us all weaker.

And the moment Mexico dissolves into chaos, our Nation will get hit by the criminals, refugees and those fleeing pure slaughter and repression… but we will be too ‘civilized’ to step in and do something. That process has already started as I pointed out last year. No one in politics wants to address it *now* because it might sound un-PC or… gasp!… ‘racist’!

I’m an old-school Nationalist. I don’t give a damned about race so long as you are civilized and abide by your responsibilities as a civilized person and respect other Nations and the Law of Nations. And if you can’t be bothered to read the works on the Law of Nations, don’t bother trying to tell me what Nationalism is or what it means. We have willfully stepped away from teaching that. Luckily that order recreates itself over hundreds of years… if we are lucky.

I don’t like following that trend line, so I warn about it. Being nice to barbarians doesn’t work. Appeasing terrorists gets people killed. Letting pirates operate unopposed threatens all trade. Not abiding by the understanding of what Nations are lose you the security of them and threatens all liberty. And civilians must oppose those that take up private arms for warfare, not self-defense.

So far we are doing the opposite on all of those things. Those who want more of those things are now in power. The analysis from that is not pretty for anyone, anywhere. We have seen the end of that road and it is described as ‘Iron Times’. Too bad so many don’t want to see that. It doesn’t take rocket science, nor ‘experts’.

Our fate is in our hands.

Too bad we think that being ‘nice’ is more important than survival.

We will pay for that in the dearest coin possible.

  6. BZ, you and I and many others have preached long and loud regarding the implosion, and resulting explosion that will occur in Mexico..

We have preached removing the ILLEGALS from this nation, they are, in MY opinion, the ready forces of our enemies waiting for the right opportunity to strike!

We have ALL pretty much said that the borders must be secured and any crossing them considered as INVADERS and shot on sight, well, all but a FAUX Intellectual that poses as an American Conservative that is…

I am not too terribly worried about my part of Texas when Mexico explodes, we are ready for this, in ALL ways, it’s the folks that are turning a blind, bleeding heart and/or liberal eye to ALL of the activities in Mexico that are in for the worst and most rude of awakenings…

Their cries of *WHY* will overpower the sounds of WAR as this battle materializes…

    And it WILL materialize…

  7. Mexico is going to be a BIG problem. I thought for about 20 yrs now that we would have seen a rocket/mortar attack from Mexico by now. The drug cartels are just the zit portion of the problem. The CAUSE lies much deeper in the Mexican culture of favoritism and coruption. It could just as easily have been communists in their country. Mexico’s problem is that there is a culture of coruption payments being part (actually major portion) of the salary for working in the govt whether the local dog catcher, beat cop, head of the army or high up in the govt.
There really isnt much that can be done to fix the situation by us or the mexican poeple short of dismantling the Mexican system and starting over again.

  8. I agree with shoprat. But those pictures BZ tell more than all the words written in your wonderful post. It is scary. Though I am not afraid to defend my self and if faced with a freaking MS-13 Gang member – and they float here in No. VA I may not know Karate, but I do know KA-Razy! I will defend myself, my family, my home. This is outrageous. Mexico is riddled with immorality on so many levels. It is a shame and the US will suffer the consequences of this stupid game we keep playing.

  9. The sad reality for me is that, at my age (60), I don’t expect to ever again see a time when America is not at war with someone. I could live with that, but I fear that the same can be said for my children also. People have got to see that there is pure evil in this world and no amount of talking, understanding, being nice, or any of the lefts answers will work. If we don’t nip shit in the bud, of course it will grow. I fear the leftards will never get this.

  10. I’ve written many posts on this subject, BZ, as you have and many others have, and it’s one thing I disagree with President Bush on and disagree vehemently! There have probably been thousands upon thousands of posts written about our need to protect our borders but we have been ignored. I’ve written my representatives several times and have been ignored. Sitting here in Texas makes me feel like a sitting duck – armed but still vulnerable, but I think I’ve accepted what will be will be. I know it sounds fatalistic but what else can we do other than take it one day at a time, hope for the best and prepare for the worst?

You are right when you say there will be finger pointing and butt covering should Mexico explode. Many Americans will be shocked because they haven’t been paying attention (as usual). I’m also concerned about those Americans who believe what’s theirs is theirs and what’s mine is theirs too. There are far too many of them out there. If our economy falls it won’t only be Mexico that we’ll need to concern ourselves with. We already have to watch for people stealing our corn and other vegetables from our crops. If they’d come up to the house and tell us they are hungry we would be happy to give them produce for nothing but no… they are too proud to ask for a handout but not too proud to steal! It’s only going to get much worse.

  11. BZ, I think you’re right on about Mexico. With this level of corruption, they’re a natural partner for jihadis and their ilk to creep in. It’s anarchy. I can see why the Mexicans want out but they’re going to rip America apart! They’ll just bring in all the filth and depravity to a country that has actually made something of itself.
What’s a crying shame is the ongoing imprisonment of the two border guards who were only doing their job protecting the border! I don’t think there has been a serious, concerted effort to protect the border for a long time now. The damage may already be done!
