Sunday

Dear Readers:

If you’ve seen some of these cartoons before, apologies. I still have no computer at home and created this post on Friday. I hope to have my “new” old desktop (with an as-yet-unidentified flatscreen) up and running sometime next week. In the meantime, know my sadness: ensconced in my Sierra Nevada mountain aerie, politics on the radio, on the television, and me unable to write about it.

Heavy sigh. I can hear the withdrawal symptoms rapidly (rabidly?) approaching.

Hope your weekend is wonderful!

  1. Getting a larger hard drive for the confuser also, and 512 more RAM. Right now I’m on the wife’s confuser at her house. With luck, I should have my desktop renovated and back in service next weekend.

  2. Hey, if you need a computer, let me know… got one I’m troubleshooting and think I finally isolated the problem being a bad cable (as Jerry Pournelle says – ‘If its not the cable, its the memory. If it isn’t the memory, reseat all the cards and cables. Use stabilant 22A. Repeat until you find the bad cable or memory stick’). Needs a 24-hour burn-in to confirm good status.

I always have one good back-up system laying around in case something goes critically wrong elsewhere, and usually have a working ancient system of some sort as an unready reserve. This one was a bunch of spares and a new, but old style motherboard, then refurbed with a new power supply. Did it that way so I could do a future motherboard swap or anyone getting it could do that with a local screwdriver computer shop. After that I have a Pico-ITX build to put in my toaster from hell, then a final refurb of an old system. That Pico-ITX is my first all-custom job, so parts hunting on-line has eaten up far too much time… still is, too… but it should be a nice and easily transportable system. Get to do my own sheet metal work, oh, joy, oh, rapture.
