Mormon

GOP Presidential candidate Mitt Romney is a Mormon. Many people have made it clear they may have difficulty electing a Mormon to the presidency. That would perchance indicate people have difficulty with most any Mormon in politics.

In my opinion, the bulk of the impetus driving the Mormon issue comes from the DEM, the Defeatist, Elitist Media at the behest of the Demorats. It is an attempt to drive any possible available wedge. Wait just a bit. The punch line is coming.

On Thursday, addressing this issue, Mitt Romney gave a speech.

He said (portions selected by me):

Let me assure you that no authorities of my church, or of any other church for that matter, will ever exert influence on presidential decisions. Their authority is theirs, within the province of church affairs, and it ends where the affairs of the nation begin.

As governor, I tried to do the right as best I knew it, serving the law and answering to the Constitution. I did not confuse the particular teachings of my church with the obligations of the office and of the Constitution — and of course, I would not do so as president. I will put no doctrine of any church above the plain duties of the office and the sovereign authority of the law.

Nor would I separate us from our religious heritage. Perhaps the most important question to ask a person of faith who seeks a political office, is this: Does he share these American values — the equality of human kind, the obligation to serve one another and a steadfast commitment to liberty?

They are not unique to any one denomination. They belong to the great moral inheritance we hold in common. They’re the firm ground on which Americans of different faiths meet and stand as a nation, united.

Infinitely worse is the other extreme, the creed of conversion by conquest: violent jihad, murder as martyrdom, killing Christians, Jews, and Muslims with equal indifference. These radical Islamists do their preaching not by reason or example, but in the coercion of minds and the shedding of blood. We face no greater danger today than theocratic tyranny, and the boundless suffering these states and groups could inflict if given the chance.

With these words, did Romney assuage the concerns of those fearing Mormons? Are Mormons to be feared?

And why, necessarily, would it make a difference if a Republican was a Mormon compared to, say, a Demorat.

Democrat Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, already in a position of great political power, is a Mormon.

  1. My problem with Romney doesn’t so much bear with him being Mormon as it does him being too unpredictable, and he has some John F’n Kerry in him too, he wears a big pair of flip-flops…

Must be a Massachusetts politics thing…

  2. Noted, and those items you mention have nothing to do with religion. They have to do with your adjudgment of his individual stances on issues. So be it, and no one can dispute your feelings on various topics.

However, in terms of simply being a Mormon this is, now according to this years’ Demorats, a complete NON-ISSUE. If it’s good enough for the high-ranking Demorats, it oughta be good enough for the GOP.

  3. You know I am in a very conservative town. You know I am in a very conservative religious movement. I haven’t run into one person that has a problem with Romney’s being mormon.

You are absolutely right about the origins and motivation of this whole pseudo controversy.

  4. BWH: it’s a controversy to those who WISH it to be a controversy. I’m not saying I’m supporting Romney necessarily; I’m simply saying: give him a chance on his record and on his public stances. And, moreover, if it’s good enough for the Demorats, it’s good enough for the GOP.

  5. I want to be perfectly clear on this. I have no problems with religious people and their faiths. If Romney is nominated I would vote for him.

My problem is with these so called Born-Again asshats. People who say God more than 300 times in a 3 minuet conversation. People who pray for new cars, new homes, money to pay their bills, jobs, better relations with their children and so on. Like God doesn’t have enough to deal with.

God takes care of those that take care of themselves.

One thing I’ve noticed about these Born-Again jerks is that all their life’s are in the Shit-Hole and they expect God to bail them out, how selfish.

I do not put Romney in this category.

  6. You kind of need to remember where he learned his political craft. From his dad George who damn near finnished off AMC in the early 60’s then turned his magic loose on the rest of Michigan. Didnt take him long to abandon Detroit while it was still a somewhat decent city.
