Congressman Weldon: There WERE WMD In Iraq!

You read it here first.

Congressman Curt Weldon, representing Pennsylvania’s 7th district, stated this afternoon on the Michael Savage show that he is now in possession of a document entitled “Continuing Evidence of WMD In Iraq” which, he states, provides information indicating that Saddam Hussein did in fact have WMD (to consist of missiles capable of transporting Sarin gas), and that Hussein moved much of what he possessed via aircraft to Syria.
Fox News broke this news an hour or so ago:

We have found weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, chemical weapons,” Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., said in a quickly called press conference late Wednesday afternoon.

The National Ground Intelligence Center was forced to revel a portion of a report (go here to see this report) referenced by Senator Santorum. The report indicates that “Since 2003, coalition forces have recovered approximately 500 weapons munitions which contain degraded mustard or sarin nerve agent.”
“This says weapons have been discovered, more weapons exist and they state that Iraq was not a WMD-free zone, that there are continuing threats from the materials that are or may still be in Iraq,” said Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Mich., chairman of the House Intelligence Committee.
If this story turns out to be TRUE, then it will be THE critical TURNING POINT on the War Against NOT “Terrorists” but the TRUE “War on Islamists.”
The ridiculous argument offered by the Dems and the DEM will finally, truly, be shot full of holes.
But the overaching question that begs even more questions: WHY WAS THIS REPORT NOT MADE PUBLIC UNTIL NOW?
The weapons are thought to be manufactured before 1991 so they would not be proof of an ongoing WMD program in the 1990s. But they do show that Saddam Hussein was lying when he said all weapons had been destroyed, and it shows that years of on-again, off-again weapons inspections did not uncover these munitions.
The release of the declassified materials comes as the Senate debates Democratic proposals to create a timetable for U.S. troops to withdraw from Iraq. The debate has had the effect of creating disunity among Democrats, a majority of whom shrunk Wednesday from an amendment proposed by Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts to have troops to be completely withdrawn from Iraq by the middle of next year.
Can you imagine a pull-out from Iraq predicated upon information such as this?
Santorum said: “This is an incredibly — in my mind — significant finding. The idea that, as my colleagues have repeatedly said in this debate on the other side of the aisle, that there are no weapons of mass destruction, is in fact false,” he said.
Once AGAIN the Dems and the DEM get it wrong. And — in truth — the GOP got it wrong too.
— WHERE has this report been hiding?
— WHY was it buried?
— WHY didn’t President Bush have access to this report until now?
— WHO is responsible?
— WHAT is the motivation for burying the report?
— HOW was this report allowed to languish for such a long time?
This will easily be the story of the week — and more!

  1. Your last questions really have me curious about maybe a political motive. It sure does sound like it was held back for a reason. I’ll be watching this one….

  2. John and AB:

The questions, to me, are the larger issue. Yes, now we know there apparently WERE WMD present much to the coming chagrin of the Dems and the DEM who INSISTED the Bush Administration LIED LIED LIED LIED! BUSH LIED PEOPLE DIED!

For those inanities, we all realize they shall not let the facts get in the way.

But why? What was the motive? Plans, plots to deceive? Or was it SHEER INCOMPETENCE on the part of some bureaucracy or, even, some bureaucrat?

What was it? And why NOW?

This poses oh so many MORE questions than it answers.

  3. Guys, listen. It wasn’t “held back.” There was nothing to hold back.

Wait, okay, let’s look at it this way:

“You and I didn’t hear about them, because they were classified.”

Oh. Classified. Since 2003. Rusty and useless old pre-Gulf War bombs. All of this “revealed” by everybody’s friend, Rick Santorum, just when you poor apes really needed some kind of boost. It’s a Christmas miracle in June, isn’t it?

Have you ever heard of the word “sucker”?

  4. Well a few of these ‘rusty and useless old bombs’ have been used in IED attacks in the past few years. That was revealed when the intial 17 shells of mustard gas was found by the Poles when we handed admin powers to them in a few areas that had calmed down.

The follow on number, however, may have come out in minor dribs and drabs, but certainly nothing to catch attention.

That said the buried chemical munitions dump that was then sealed with concrete and buried has come to light via the captured documents and satellite imagery do show lineaments in the land indicating a large *something* was buried there for some period of time. Local report noxious fumes emanating from this area, and so should be checked out. According to the documentation, this was done in an effort to *hide* these stores and munitions from inspectors so they could be later dug up and used.

Further, the ISG report demonstrates quite clearly that Saddam had ongoing research, experimentation and production of chemical weapons, including spin-mix in-flight shells, that keep two non-toxic components separated until they can be mixed after firing while rotation of the shell breaks the internal barriers to thoroughly make the necessary compound. Those were absolutely prohibited by the cease fire agreements.

Also prohibited was the research into longer range missile and rocket technology which those aluminum tubes were being used to develop. Its system furtherst range would have been, if memory serves, Cairo, Egypt. That development was *also* prohibited under the cease fire agreement.

Also found were attempts to hide material and components from the weapons inspectors, and this is methodically outlined in the captured Iraqi memos from various organizations on how Saddam was continuing his research and production of such things as VX nerve gas, mustard gas and anthrax weaponization. The ISG documents indicated this and the captured documents demonstrate that this, indeed, is the case.

Finally there are indications via the documents that Russia GRU special weapons units were in Iraq to help dismantle the existing capability and either hide it or ship it out of the country. Not only was a convoy of 20 trucks seen heading towards Syria in the days leading up to the war, but Saddam indicated some concerns of a USAF unit stationed in Jordan being able to overfly that area.

500 shells demonstrates the Saddam did, indeed, hold back on his promises and commitments. The entire picture of Iraq under Saddam, from documents and personal accounts may take decades to put in places as happened with Germany after WWII. It will be an interesting portrait of a man using the power of a State to undermine his enemies, play on fears and do anything he can to grasp more and more power to himself. He was willing to kill his own people to get to that, at a minimum of 1.2 Million dead and hundreds of thousands deported… and the dead may rise to easily three times that figure as no one knows exactly how many families were completely killed or how many people *disappeared* and then their contacts killed.

These shells are just another piece in a much, much larger puzzle.

  5. I think no one is making a big deal out of it is because, it’s really not a big deal. We already know Saddam was hiding weapons and not being upfront. But is this proof that he was such a threat to American security that we had to go to war when we did? I don’t think so. Over the next decade I’m sure there will be more stuff but this is like finding old gum drops after you’ve burned down the candy store because the owner said he didn’t have any honey buns.

  6. James: nice phrasing, that. I like the turn of words used.

Salmonella: welcome aboard and come visit again. I disagree, but you are certainly welcome any time. The point was: as opposed to those who believe our president lied, here is more in a chain of events indicating that he did not.

A Jacksonian is correct: Saddam possessed not only WMD but kinds and types specifically prohibited by cease fire agreements, resulting in the UN sanctions and demands the UN itself was not interested in backing up making, as we all know, the UN a hollow and pointless entity.

“Pull the troops from Iraq!” I hear the Left say. First, shall we not pull our troops from Bosnia? Oh, but, well, that’s okay, they were installed by Clinton. . .

  7. You know I have to chime in on this one!

O.K. WE HAVE BEEN SAYING HE MOVED THE WMD’S TO SYRIA A LONG TIME AGO.
WHY WOULD A BEAR BECOME A CAT? Sadam is Sadam who mass murdered the Kurds with WMD’S!!!!!!!!!! Where in the H**# does Scott Ritter, the child molester, get off when he tried to make us believe that he dismantled them!!
We just found the ones ritter told us he got rid of!!

What makes anyone think a Hitler man like this would comply with anyone?? The fact is this: While we were messing around with the U.N. for one year prior to going in, Sadam had plenty of time to send his program off to Syria, but I think Hans Blix and others like him KNEW THAT while it was going on. I think the U.N. stalled on purpose.

Sadaam had them and the insurgents were there BEFORE we went in, and Sadaam was in cohoots with Bin Laden, and he would have handed over the WMD’s easy. You don’t need paper evidence to figure that out. Sheez… The libs are so screwed up.

  8. Oh yeh.. the old mantra..”Bush lied”!! is tortally wrong even if we didn’t find WMD’s.. The libs looked at the SAME INTELLIGENCE Bush looked at and came to the SAME conclusion.. SO, WHERE IS THE LIE HERE? I don’t get how they came up with that and managed to brain wash people with it. If there were no WMD’s found in Iraq, then blame the CIA and FBI for misinformatino, why blame Bush?

  9. Rebecca – Indeed, no lie was told and the ISG confirmed the continued work by Saddam in chem/bio/nuclear weapons areas after 1991. Most of Saddam’s equipment suppliers were from bribed companies, mostly in France and Russia, but some German and Dutch equipment was found, if memory serves, heading for the scrapyards in the days leading up to and right after the war started.

We are currently in these nations following wars: Germany, Japan, South Korea. Over 6 decades for the first two and heading hard to 5 for the last… they *must* be failures!

    *run away! run away!*
    [/cue]

This is not to speak of the UK, Spain, Italy, Bosnia, Kosovo, Bahrain, Kuwait…. dear me! This is becoming quite a list… can I have a notebook, please?

Many of those with Treaties involved, and others, well, by right of being there for the most part. A few with the Useless Nations to ‘help’… with prostitution rings, white slavery, pedophilia, ‘Blue Helmet Babies’…

Say, what are we doing helping out a bunch of racists, sexist, exploiting thugs like the UN usually sends from its third world nations on Blue Helment missions?

Be that as it may, this entire mantra on Iraq has me, quite frankly, PO’d at those doing the yelling as they had nothing to offer in its place save the already falling apart sanctions regime which, oh so many of these same quibblers wanted *lifted* so that Saddam could hurt even more people! Loverly!

So, what do you call folks who do not like to see liberty spread and, in fact, naysay any attempt to hold totalitarian regimes responsible to *anything*?

Hmmmmmm… yes, many words come to mind, and most not for polite company. Have to steer clear of Godwin’s Law… yes, the Ba’athist regime was Fascist, but it is so impolite to point *that* out…

Ah! They support Tyrrany, thus they are Tyrranical in doing so!

Fits perfectly! And it is tyrrany and oppression of thought they wish to spread everywhere before them. Mind you, I am labeling the *activity* they take, not their purported outlook or ‘intent’… I am not a mind reader! And neither are THEY, though thought control is high on their agenda.

I have always been a ‘let the chips fall where they may’ on this… because the trend of the chips coming down is not to the US… but Syria, Russia, France, China, Germany… such lovely chips to see fall.
