Some years ago I wouldn’t have thought this possible — now, I cannot say as I am completely floored:
The Chicago Police Department is seriously considering scrapping the police entrance exam, sources tell Fran Spielman.
Dropping the exam would bolster minority hiring and avert legal battles, according to one source, while others confirm that the exam could be scrapped to open the process to as many people as possible.
Thinking of this possibility, even in passing, makes me glad that I’ll be retiring in the not too terribly distant future. I wouldn’t want to be a cop if and when this trend goes national — and take the heat from the ridiculous abrogations of law, bad decisions and societal messes that are assured to occur.
The placement of a qualified police officer on the street depends on a series of checks and balances that occur along the way. Any potential officer — at least in Fornicalia — has to pass a written entrance exam at the very start, then pass a physical-challenge course, a doctor’s hands-on physical examination, a psychological exam, and a polygraph or CVSA. From there, a background check is conducted. Then comes the academy.
Following graduation, the recruit is placed onto the streets with a training officer. Upon successful completion, the officer is on full probation for one year.
Taking away an entrance exam? And, moreover, taking away an entrance exam for the purposes of melanin count?
This is not only a ridiculous proposition but dangerous as well. How assuaged will you feel when an officer, lawfully equipped to utilize deadly force, comes to your home to assist — and is a product of no immediate or primary vetting?
Ladies and gentlemen, that is a consideration made solely in terms of “political correctness” and a clear recipe for disaster.
BZ
Bloviating Zeppelin,
This really is political correctness run amok! Seriously do these people not see any of the possible dangerous long term consequences of this?
Just one MORE reason NOT to go to Chicago… and it’s Chicago politics at it’s “finest”…
It makes sense…after all, a Chicago politician didn’t take an entrance exam to become the President of the United States….
Oh wait…bad example…look where we are at now…
What, exactly is on the exam? If someone has a degree in Criminal Justice (4yr) shouldn’t they easily be able to pass it? Don’t see why it should be hard to pass it if they are qualified. I want someone who can EASILY pass this test before I give then a gun and a badge. If they are as bad as the cops in Detroit, look out. Once, I walked into a gas station in Detroit, saw an armed robbery in progress (turned around and got the hell out of there before I was noticed) and drove off. Within a minute, I was behind a Detroit Police car. I’m honking, flashing my lights like crazy. Finally after SEVERAL BLOCKS the cop pulls over. I immediately relay the info about the ARMED ROBBERY STILL IN PROGRESS. He laconicly says “I’ll check it out”. No blue lights, nothing, drives off. To this day I wonder if he even went back there.
Please, there are 2,000 statutatorially authorized jobs currently going unfilled in Chicago simply because there aren’t enough “diverse” test-passers to meet the city’s hiring race quotas.
It’s time for THIS Adminstration to “pivot” on jobs, qualifications for them be damned and FILL those statutatorially authorized and Stmulus-bill created positions, unless of course, those dis-qualifications are racial in origin.”
Getting Democrats back to work simply MUST be our FIRST priority!
btw – Go union!
ps – Buy a Chevy! Union fat-cats deserve their pensions much more than do the corporate executive scabs that work for Ford!
Hey, Hey, Hey! Whoa!
Why you trippin? Dis system is to help out us hoo aint got no rich family to get whatever we need! So, we aint finish wit sckool. Hoo kairz?
Ah, c’mon, BZ. Don’t you know anyone can do the job of a police officer? I mean, all we do is ride around, drink coffee, and eat donuts.
How hard can it be?
You don’t need anything special to act as cop/priest/counselor/bouncer at a moments notice.
Not at all.

Isn’t this the same concept that led to the Police Academy movies? A few oddballs turned out to be good cops but the rest. . . .
I do hope they at least they at least do a background check on them.
The truth BZ, is that standands must be lowered to get more minorities into uniform. Its not longer the quality of the man in the uniform, but the color of his skin that counts, and this my friend is becoming the bottom line in many localities all over the nation. These policies in the end will cost life’s and led to more corruption in the departments and on the streets. Sadly we are a nation that going, not in the right direction, but one that has reversed course and headed toward the trash pile of history if this present direction continues. Chicago hell, Old NFO, avoid all large cities for the all going down this path.
so the hood gonna guard the hood eh? all in the name of increasing minority presence…..hmmmmmmmm note to self: don’t move to chicago area.
Damien: welcome, thanks for visiting and commenting. And you’re entirely correct.
NFO: and another reason I don’t go to SF any more.
Tom: ooooops. . .
Tim: oh, you know, just stuff like can you add, can you subtract, can you read, can you think, can you think in the abstract, can you read a paragraph and know what it means, can you take a rule and apply it to a given situation? Just really, really, stupid, completely unnecessary stuff like that which, clearly, should be abolished.
FJ: good point. Let’s get Demorats back to work. To hell with employing Republicans or Independents. Matter of fact, that question should be on ANY good hiring questionnaire, in order to sort out the Right Wingers and independent thinkers. An excellent, excellent point.
But sorry, I like Toyotas. I have three. All paid off.
NEO: cuz, thanks fo chimin’ in.
cj: paid for nothing, making too damned much money, all unionized up and shit. . .
Shop: you know, maybe we ought to eliminate that next. Hmmmm. You may be on to something.
Ron: big cities are enclaves for losers. Why else might people be moving OUT of them?
BZ
Don: and stay away from other major cities as well; this “concept” may move across the country.
BZ
This is hard to believe,,thus I will wait to see what happens.
As a retired LEO who taught felony car stops, to live in a world with law officers not qualified by “POST”, the California I knew years ago, will then return to the stone age.
I do remember the early 80’s when armegeddon was about to happen back then.
I also was a LEO during the Watts riot of 1965, who was injured there during it.
Mr Chuck: you date a bit before me; however, I was working as a Reserve during the early 70s when SF was a Weatherman/SLA/BGF/Weather Underground/Black Panthers/Leftist target area, and one of our own cops was killed in the Central Valley. I can clearly remember when, after a call, we’d check our wheel wells and under our cars for “packages” and, at the scene of a call requiring multiple units, you’d have to leave at least ONE officer back at the cars to ensure they were undamaged when the other deputies returned.
Back in the day when I carried an actual sap in my sap pocket; back in the day when I carried sap gloves; back in the day when I carried a 6″ Python and walked and rode the streets with 6 in the cylinder and two speedloaders on the Sam Browne. And that’s IT.
BZ
BZ,
As Shoprat says this is Police Academy come to life. I don’t miss the job as I saw the decline towards the end of my career. I feel for the dedicated officers trying to do the right thing everyday. They’re the ones I worry about. The citizens will take care of themselves. As the wicked witch said in the Wizard of Oz, “What a world, what a world…”
Keep your head down and cover your ass my friend.
BZ, first of all, a belated happy new year to you and your better half. Your post, as usual, has left me almost too stunned to comment, I come from a law enforcement family, so I’ll duck out with a couple 2nd Amendment reminders – I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy; and when seconds count, the cops are just minutes away. Cheers, my friend, and keep on uncovering the outrageous and unjust for us to marvel and ponder . . .
