Conscience? Where was his conscience in 2002??? ON vacation, or more concerned about covering up the scandal? Legal requirments were the same in 2002, he should have reported Sandusky to the police! Good riddance to him, and I’m glad to see his legacy tarnished by the scandal, that HE could have put a stop to 9 years ago if he’d done the RIGHT thing.
Add me to Old NFO’s opinion.
Wow. Such venom.
What happened at Penn State was horrible. It was a disgrace to a decent university and it left countless young people with scars to bear.
But…
Joe Paterno did what he was supposed to do. He reported the situation to the proper people at the university.
They, apparently, chose to cover things up. They are the ones worth the venom being heaped on Paterno.
And, I have to ask, where the hell were the parents of those children? Reportedly one boy came home, told his mother “If you’re wondering why my hair is wet, we took a shower.” Excuse me? Why didn’t the mother call the cops and report that a grown man was taking a shower with her son? I sure the hell would’ve.
And let’s not forget the man who actually saw ‘something’ going on in the shower and did nothing… except tell Paterno. Any man worth his salt should’ve done a damned site more in that situation but, according to the man himself, he wasn’t sure what he saw, or that anything was going on.
If Paterno is guilty of anything, it was the naivety of his generation, the generation which didn’t acknowledge such horrible things.
He did not ‘do nothing’. He did what he believed he had to do.
And, considering everything else I know about the man, I am sure he regretted not doing more.
Child sexual abuse is a horrible thing. I’ve dealt with it on a level I wish I could say I hadn’t. I’ve seen the pain and damage it does up close and personal because of my job.
I’ve also seen the way our society treats children: hyper-sexualizing young children for contests and movies and fashion magazines; the latest is Christie Brinkley’s 10-year-old who, in a print ad, looks at least 16.
Yes, Paterno should’ve done more. Penn State should’ve done more. The parents and that assistant coach sure the hell should’ve done more.
But…
So should we. How many of you willing to spit venom at Paterno are just as willing to speak out against those print ads and contests? How many people are willing to speak out against Hollywood’s trend toward adults having relationships with children in movies such as Nicole Kidman’s “Birth”?
Paterno, over a lifetime, was a good and decent man that did a lot of good things and helped a lot of young men.
And a FUCK Paterno post here: Amid scandal, revered PSU coach Joe Paterno dies

Rest in peace, JoePa.
