P.S.

I am now working with Mozilla Firefox and have been so for roughly the past four months. I am also alternately blogging from not only a PC but my MacBook Pro with OSX.

Perhaps this is Ancient History to some of you, but I find MF to be quite so MUCH better than Internet Exploder. I cannot recommend it higher. Clearly, I am a late comer to Firefox — but perhaps better late than never. When using MF I find my internet experience isn’t subject to the prevailing prairie winds, tidal pull, sunspots, and phases of the moon according to The GatesMeister.

P.P.S.
I have had one day off in the past two weeks — today — and I am slotted to attend mandatory AOT training then back into my regular work schedule. I’ll attempt to keep blogging as much as possible but work, as we all know, tends to interfere with the best of our Blogospheric Intentions.

Does it not?

  1. I’ve found Chrome to be as much better than MF as Firefox is better than IE. It’s fast, blazingly so and there’s generally great support for it. It can be a little quirky occasionally but it “feels” light. Fast… it does what you would expect a web browser to do, which is to stay the heck out of the way and display content.

  2. There are some things that FFX does that are tools not easily replicated by MSIE, like the Ad Block and No Script ones. Those two end up on any build of FFX I use, along with Grease Monkey and Ref Control, the former for on-page scripting (which MSIE doesn’t do at all) and the other for letting some sites behave properly when I move from page to page.

I use Avant Browser and IEPro for skinning MSIE, so that it gets a number of FFX capabilities and speeds site loading. Some of the ad blocking in Avant is very useful, along with the tools to stop scripting, flash and other things… yes FFX can get those with add-ons, but to have those native on the skin, like Avant, makes it immediate and integrated.

Back both with Privoxy and the Neil Van Dyke basic blocking script, and point your browser to the proxy it sets up and you get the ability to kill all sorts of intrusive and quite nasty scripting and site bugs like nothing else around… it takes a bit to learn, but using that to back MSIE makes for pleasant, clean, no-ad browsing.

I’ve used Chrome and it has a few good points as does Opera and Orca (from the Avant folks), but not as my main browser. Seamonkey from the Mozilla groups is trying to be the one-stop browser, mail reader, RSS accumulator, one-man band that uses all the FFX and Thunderbird add-ons… to a degree. Nice, but… the degree isn’t compelling for me and as I don’t do any IM some of the software is lost to me for utility.

And there are some pages that just don’t display right in MSIE, FFX and their cousins, which makes having a final rendering engine mandatory, thus Opera or Chrome. Just because a page is W3C compliant doesn’t mean that it displays well.

  3. bz . . . You received a couple of good comments on this – but I’m still a bit confused. Do you blog on the Macbook and PC? Interesting. Now I understand you are working Firefox. I tried it. Fast on my pc but needed several add ons. Went back to IE but hopefully only temporarily. I’m impressed with my daughter’s Mac. Seems fast compared to my loaded pc. My question. Do you use Firefox for your Mac or for the pc or for both. . . Bump

  4. Jinksto: I know very little about Chrome and have an inherent suspicion of it simply because it comes from Google and they, I’m sure, collect every molecule of data from your every microsecond on the web. Can you tell me what makes it so good? I must admit, I have NEVER even seen what it looks like; I really don’t want to load it until I physically see someone else with it on their confuser and how it works.

Beamish: I dunno; Firefox seems to work for me. But I, uh, “get it.” Exploder continues to explode.

AJ: God bless ya, but after the first paragraph ya lost me, brother. I can only hope that whatever got “skinned” — that it didn’t hurt too terribly much.

OMH: yes sir, I do. The only PC I have left, after losing both hard drives on my custom desktop confuser, is my old, slow, weighty HP Pavilion zd8000, which weighs about 3.29 tons but has a nice screen. I carry this between my wife’s house and my cabin. The Macbook Pro is kept at my wife’s house. I don’t know how to do much on it at all, but I can cruise the internet acceptably on it.

All I know is that the Macbook boots up VERY quickly and shuts down very quickly. I REALLY like the boot-up speed of that thing.

And finally: I loaded Firefox on both the laptops: the HP and the Macbook. My gig is this: I’ll have a MINIMUM of five tabs open in Firefox at any given time — or more. And because I work the tabs so much, I find Firefox — for me — is MUCH easier to manipulate and to move between all those various websites I consult during the creation of blogposts.
