Protection

When I go out in public, by dint of my profession, I am primarily armed. Depending on where I go, I am heeled with my issue handgun, a Sig-Sauer 9mm model P226. When I carried my own personal weapon on duty, I opted for the SS P220 in .45 calibre, Euro release. From there I transitioned to the Glock Model G17 — the best and most accurate gun I ever shot. But because, when cleaning, you have to be smarter than the gun, my department removed the Glock from its inventory. They had two ADs into the cleaning shack when each officer had not followed basic rules: 1. Remove magazine. 2. Slide back. 3. Check ejection port. 4. Re-check port. 5. Do NOT depress trigger unless 1 – 4 accomplished.

I repeat: you have to be smarter than the gun.

I was Rangemaster for my 2,000+ department for 3 years. I would see officer after officer demand to transition from the 9mm to the 40cal Sig Sauer because they had heard that “real men” did this. I said this then and say it now: it isn’t about the round. It’s all about WHERE YOU PLACE the round. Two to the chest, one to the head. Two to the heart, two to the head.

Double tap. Triple tap. Precision. Placement.

These days, I am armed doubly or sometimes triply.

I am armed with my Glock 17, and perhaps two extra 17-round magazines.

Or I am heeled with my Charter Arms .44 caliber Bulldog Pug — a snubnosed 5-shot revolver with a bobbed trigger, rubber grips, and 4 5-round speedloaders.

Or further, with two knives:

First, my Gerber metal boot knife (more like a stiletto), in a leather sheath with button.

Second, I have been scouring the internet for large knives that I can load onto my shoulders like handguns; that is to say, carrying a 14″ or 15″ knife of the Bowie variety, whereupon I can pull it vertically from the high middle of my back, for a defensive or offensive posture.

That would require, of course, a rig custom made.

Anyone know of a knife maker or a sheath maker coming close to these requirements?
