Spending: Then & Now

Our Mr Obama said in a 2006 floor speech that preceded a Sentate vote to extend the debt limit:

Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership.”

Mr Obama then later joined his fellow Demorats in voting en bloc against raising the debt increase.

From TheHill.com:

Now Obama is asking Congress to raise the debt ceiling, something lawmakers are almost certain to do despite misgivings about the federal debt. The ceiling already has been hiked three times in the past two years, and the House took action earlier this year to raise the ceiling to $13 trillion.

“Conservatives” elected Mr George Walker Bush. Myself included. Little did we know, then, that he was just a bit of a Social Conservative (with his millions and millions of dollars wasted on AIDS in Africa, an exercise in enriching the pockets of black continental African racists). And little did we know that he was a massive Fiscal Liberal. He never met an expensive bill he didn’t essentially endorse. Vetoes? Vetoes? “We don’t need no steenkeen vetoes!

Considering that, he was only, at best, a moderate security Conservative. He refused to constrain our borders both north and south.
Which brings us to now:
Again, from TheHill.com:

The Senate must move legislation to raise the federal debt limit beyond $12.1 trillion by mid-October, a move viewed as necessary despite protests about the record levels of red ink.The move will highlight the nation’s record debt, which has been central to Republican attacks against Democratic congressional leaders and President Barack Obama. The year’s deficit is expected to hit a record $1.6 trillion.

Where’s TARP?
Where’s all of our Stimulus Packages?
Who accounts for this? Where has an accounting been? Nowhere? Nothing? Billions pissed away as if they didn’t exist?
And yet, despite this, despite Mr Obama’s abhorrence with the Bush Administrations up-pushing of the Nation Debt?
Oh, well.
That’s fine.
Because he is, after all, The One. And it’s All About Him now.

  1. Total expenditures for fiscal year 2007 were $2.730 trillion. The current national debt is $11.787 trillion. If you divide the total by the yearly, it comes to about 4.3 times. What this means is that, without increasing spending we have already spent the money we needed to last us until January 2013. That should scare anybody that sees it, but of course it won’t.

  2. Well, at least you point out the failure of Bush to restrain spending. You forgot to mention, of course, that he was left a budget surplus by Clinton. That would mean that you would have to agree that Clinton did at the very least one thing right. Let’s not gloss over the fact that Iraq was totally ridiculous and will cost about 3trillion when all is said and done. Heck, if we hadn’t been sidetracked by Iraq, we’d have finished with the Taliban years ago.
And why do you feel that we have to “tighten up” the northern border? Living 20 minutes away from Canada, I find that our friends to the north have never been anything but great nieghbors and do nothing but contribute to the overall prosperity of the US. They are getting upset with us for treating them like Mexico and I don’t blame them.
Obama really has done very little to change the status quo. The uproar over the speech yesterday will just drive a few more people out of the Republican party and diminish their numbers for 2010.
I used to vote republican but now feel that they simply have gone crazy. Until they start getting back to reality I and most moderate, centrist voters in America will do the same.

  3. Tim: I’m not denigrating the Canadians; ANY hole in our borders and our ports invites casualties and decreases sovereignty.

That was then; this is NOW.

And Mr Obama, who excoriated Bush for the same thing, now wants to UP the deficit ceiling?

    In TRILLIONS?

  4. Its like the song… ‘the answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind…’

Lots of hot air out of DC.

And remember: Obama has spent more than Iraq and Afghanistan, for their entire length, COMBINED in 6 months than the previous Administration did since 2001.
