In a quiet act of defiance, the Senate approved a $555 billion omnibus spending bill that removed legal requirements mandating the federal government fund 854 miles of a double layer border fence spanning America’s southwestern border.
When the spending bill, which combines appropriations for a number of federal agencies, reached the Senate, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Tex.) attached S.Amdt. 2466 to the measure in order to silently gut the SFA’s spending requirement.
Nothing in this paragraph shall require the secretary of homeland security to install fencing, physical barriers, roads, lighting, cameras and sensors in a particular location along an international border of the United States, if the secretary determines that the use or placement of such resources is not the most appropriate means to achieve and maintain operational control over the international border at such location.”
The Hutchison amendment gives DHS virtually total discretion over how and where the fence is built,” commented Steve Elliott, president of Grassfire.org.
“In fact, DHS would not be required to build fencing in any particular location – and the double-layer mandate is totally gone.”
The double-layer border fence, which was premised on the fence erected outside San Diego, consists of two layers of fencing with a border patrol access road separating the fencing. California Congressman Duncan Hunter, who is also running for the Republican nomination, was instrumental in building the fence in San Diego and boasts the fence reduced the smuggling of drugs and people into San Diego by 90 percent. Mr. Hunter further contends his fence is virtually impenetrable.
But with the Senate’s amendment, the fate of the fence remains in limbo and sets the stage for another congressional showdown on immigration now that the amended Senate version comes back to the House for consideration.
Next, the republicans (if you can call them that anymore)are gonna come after your guns. Common sense is dying. What is wrong with people? Is there any hope?
KBH is after the Mexican vote when she leaves office to run for Tx Gov.
Kay Bailey Hutchison killed the fence? @&#%!!! Boy, is she going to get a letter and a phone call from me! The Democrats are bad enough without Republicans joining them in their stupidity. Kay Bailey Hutchison is now on my list, and I’m sure you know which list I mean.
I would have backed Duncan Hunter and wish he were still in the race.
In addition and because of this single issue, Kay will never, ever get my vote, not even if she should run for dogcatcher!
Miss Kay (R), killed the fence a while back, way to go on keeping up with Texas news…
Makes ya proud to be a Repub huh??
Damn shame some folks gotta rely on a blogger in Cali to let em know that their Repub Senator is a dumb bitch…
On a different note:
BZ, is this one of your ‘staged’ posts?? I know you set a few up to post as you go… Are you OK man?? Get some word out if you can, the news here, for those of us that actually watch news, is not painting a very nice pic of your area…
It’s curious that the GOP wins when it sticks to its principles and loses when they abandon them.
It’s the other way around for the Democrats.
This doesn’t shock me unfortunately.
I have really been thinking about what is going on in the GOP.
Basically, the GOP is losing it’s core slowly.
We need to do what is right regardless of the cost to our selves AND our political seat. WE are servants of the people. The rest of our principles derive from that core basically.
The people wanted a wall. THe people we trusted and voted for made us think they will eventually build it. Turns out they lied and did it for political expediency; BOTH republicans and dems. They deceived us… The servants of the people.
One of the bad principles the GOP is embracing is that it is o.k. to do something that is against the law if it benefits us. So we have accepted illegal aliens because it benefits these companies and farms who hire them. If they go away, then down goes these business and farms and down goes the economy.
I thought our dollar said, “In God we Trust”.. that is part of trusting in God.. You do the right thing and let the pieces fall where they may.
Perhaps one of the reasons for the lack of real conservatism in the republican party is that they have forgotten God? (I am not talking about the Huckabee version of Jesus either. ;~).
Isn’t that where we get most of our principles from in the GOP? Isn’t that why most of the time when we follow those principles it usually ends up working?
We are totally failing on the illegal immigrant thing.. I am sorry.. They need to get out of America and come back in the legal way.
DOn’t seperate families. Send the whole family back. Send the legal kids back with their parents. Just fix the beaurocracy at the border and make it take less time to become legal.
We need a wall too, and the illegal’s kids don’t deserve a full ride to college either.
Rivka, you are the most accurate poster I have ever seen, great observations.. 🙂
Thanks for that, Fred. As Wordsmith knows, I’ve taken a month off from blogging and have listened to very little news. What you think is of no concern to me. The explanation is for others who may read all the comments.
Fred: I wrote this two days ago. I had to leave my house in the mountains because I completely lost power and the ability to cook. I could stay warm, take a warm shower, but I couldn’t read, couldn’t write, couldn’t SEE. I helped some other people in my area and then came down the hill to my wife’s house this morning. I couldn’t keep up with the crap falling on my property and just said “screw it.” So yeah, this post is two days old. Guilty.
And as far as the GOP, well, I’ve been holding my own here as long as I can. I’m crucially torn between excoriating them and trying to hold an semblance of line. But when they continuously pull this “moderation” crap. . .
BZ
BZ, I was pretty sure you had some rounds in magazine…:)
I was just shocked at the reaction of some folks weren’t aware of what KBH had done this bullshit, 2 months ago…
Glad to hear from you, I was hoping you got off the hill, might not be 10 feet deep but 4 or 5 is enough to take a hiatus…
And look at the bright side, the reservoirs will look good going into summer maybe…
Of course the Republican from my district had to go to Syria to kiss some butt a few months back. I didn’t think much of him before and now… too many on the R side are just all *warm and fuzzy* with embracing illegals, tyrants, dictators. Just like the D party – trying to do nice things for folks in other Nations and squat for the citizens of the US, save put us into permanent debt with wonderful ideas of healthcare, welcoming in law breakers and generally thinking that putting up a ‘free day’ sign in a candy store will not see bare shelves at the end of the day.
Any Nationalists left out there?
BTW Fred, this seemed to be news to me. I thought the link was recent. I guess I really AM starting to miss a lot of stuff. . .

That day, Senator Hutchison went from front runner for Governor to unelectable.
I consider that one bad point in a long career of service. Of course that point will insure that I’ll vote against her.
Our other senator also voted against the fence.
The real rub is, the are not RINOs. These were one mostly conservative senator and one completely conservative senator.
I am positive that Texas voters wanted this fence more than the rest of the country.
I just wonder what lobbyist did this in and how he did it. Clearly my senators can either be bought or at best fooled.
What is troubling is the Republicans actually are getting hammered by the Demorats for being to TOUGH on the border…. YET they are the ones that are SCREWING us…
Independent is the way I’m voting from here on out and I am changing my party affiliation.
All: when we no longer have a GOP, then what do we have?
BZ
Blo,
In answer to your question..
The real conservatives won’t become moderates. That is the true nature of conservatism. Conservatives stick to their principles and won’t go down with the rest. Those who do go down weren’t really solid to begin with.
The Democrats. They switch and sway with the winds of what is popular, and that is why the core is far left now.
That is why they can follow insane principles put forth by leaders like Obama and Hillary. THey are nothing like they used to be.
We are headed in that direction, BUT I think because we are who we are we won’t allow it ultimately.
Part of her reason for killing the fence is that along most of the proposed route it was between 1 and 5 miles FROM the border. Leaving some towns split and others COMPLETELY in the new no mans land or should I say illegals staging area IN THE US.
