Earlier, Democrats wanted an increase in troops. Now, because it’s a different strategy pushed by Bush, the Defeatocrats do not want an increase in troops. And various Republicans are crossing or poised to cross the aisle over to the Dems’ side.
It’s time to take a stand. And time for Republicans to grow a spine.
We can help the GOP with this spine-building effort in terms of cash — the removal thereof.
This is a war. And Iraq is not The War itself; it is merely one campaign in the larger war picture. Recently four of our soldiers were abducted and shot in the head.
The GOP Starts To Cave:
Senator John Warner (R-VA), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Gordon Smith (R-Oregon), Norm Coleman (R-Minnesota), Sam Brownback (R-Kansas), Lamar Alexander (R-Tennessee) and George Voinovich (R-Ohio) are some of the Republicans going soft, slimy and invertebrate on President Bush. Warner, specifically, introduced a resolution of opposition to Bush’s plan which (naturally) is being embraced by many Democrats.
Minority Leader Mitch McConnell likewise needs to be reminded of his duty to assist in the reconstruction of GOP invertebrates.
General Petraeus nailed it when Hugh Hewitt interviewed Tony Snow yesterday:
HH: But Tony Snow, did you understand General Petraeus yesterday to say as I think he said, the Biden resolution, or the Warner resolution would provide encouragement to the enemy?
TS: I mean, I believe his answer to that characterization was, and I quote, “That’s correct, sir.”

If the United States Senate passes a resolution, non-binding or otherwise, that criticizes the commitment of additional troops to Iraq that General Petraeus has asked for and that the president has pledged, and if the Senate does so after the testimony of General Petraeus on January 23 that such a resolution will be an encouragement to the enemy, I will not contribute to any Republican senator who voted for the resolution. Further, if any Republican senator who votes for such a resolution is a candidate for re-election in 2008, I will not contribute to the National Republican Senatorial Committee unless the Chairman of that Committee, Senator Ensign, commits in writing that none of the funds of the NRSC will go to support the re-election of any senator supporting the non-binding resolution.

I am so excited about how many bloggers have posted on this and are spreading the word and how much it has grown. When I signed the pledge it had 13,000 signatures and last I heard it had over 20,000. This is an extremely important issue and it is the first time I’ve pushed a petition on anyone in a very long time. Thats how important I think it is.
The only good thing about the elections last fall is that we got rid of the likes of Chafee and DeWine. Now we need to get rid of some of the other RINOs but most of all we do not need to be nominating the King Rino McCain for the Republican nomination.
Isn’t Sam Brownback running in 08. I’ll have to let someone know about this, as I think he threw his support behind him.
LMC: You BET it is an EXTREMELY important issue. I have yearly contributed both to Bush and to the GOP via the NRC. The GOP isn’t getting one more red cent of my cash if they fold on this issue because there is NO REASON to fold. The Dems were OBSTRUCTIONIST and too MANY a stand against Republicans including filibusters. So, what, the GOP can’t do the same thing in return?
The GOP TALKS about being “stand-up” and TALKS about intestinal fortitude yet, when the chips are down, they appear to fold in misery and infantile squabbling.
“Oh,” they bawl, “we can’t afford to lose votes and possibly upset anyone — we wouldn’t want people to be unhappy with us or be perceived to be non-inclusionists.”
Screw that, you ball-less empty suits. Take a stand or change your party. Further, let’s see just how well you do with NO VOTES and NO CASH.
If it takes the entire disassembly of the Republican Party to get their attention, I’m ready. You either stand TOGETHER or you fall SINGLY.

The distinction does need to be made between the weenie Republican senators and the good ones. We have always known that Collins, McCain and some of the others have no backbone mostly because they are from such liberal states. They need to be sent a message that their weenie behavior isn’t okay and we will cut off their money and spread the word to others.
I emailed a bunch of the weenie Republicans and I also emailed the leadership to let them know now was not the time to cave.
Even though Brownback is a solid conservative I have never been a big fan of his. His non-support for Bush’s surge plan really pissed me off. I was pretty blatant in emailing him. I said you support McCain/Warner’s compromise on this awful resolution and I WILL NOT under any circumstances vote for you in the Republican Presidential Primary.
As for McCain I asked him how many more times he was going to betray Republicans and the American people.

This war is too important to our country’s survival and freedom for everyone to be appeasing, spineless politicians. Time to hold their feet to the fire.
LMC: and I agree, not all Repubs are in that camp — but as I wrote, it’s still incumbent upon Mitch McConnell to get on the butts of the malingerers and STOP the practice of looking the other way when everyone isn’t on the same sheet of music. Why have a party if the party can’t be unified?
