  1. I969 I was among the first instrument rating students for a startup flight school owned by some UAL instructors. They had a lot on the line getting their first few students rated and would put us on UAL simulators after hours. They used the 727 simulator.

    I was no novice, had a Commercial ticket and a lot of single engine time. My success rate on a 727 simulator without autopilot? About 30%. Airspeed control is difficult.

    Somehow it all worked. Passed my flight test the first time with an examiner with a reputation for flunking everyone on the first try.

    The experience left me with a profound respect for those who fly the heavies.
