U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl at one point during his captivity converted to Islam, fraternized openly with his captors and declared himself a “mujahid,” or warrior for Islam, according to secret documents prepared on the basis of a purported eyewitness account and obtained by Fox News.
The reports indicate that Bergdahl’s relations with his Haqqani captors morphed over time, from periods of hostility, where he was treated very much like a hostage, to periods where, as one source told Fox News, “he became much more of an accepted fellow” than is popularly understood. He even reportedly was allowed to carry a gun at times.

There’s so much about this we don’t and may never know. Wikileaks has documents purporting to show he was captured while answering a ‘call from nature’. Then 2 former taliban commanders say they found him walking alone acting strangely and cursing. One of them said “Think he had deserted his army with a mission and wanted to accept Islam, but our people didn’t trust him. That shattered his belief.” Then another one said he hadn’t wanted to convert…but was unhappy with his countrymen.
I wonder what kind of expectations he had when he joined the army which later proved to be unrealistic. He learned to ride and shoot at a young age. Tried to join the Foreign Legion. Talked about going to Africa to teach self defense techniques to villagers. Later in the army he read much about humanitarian causes, philosophy, ethics.
He spent much time with the afghanis before he took his walk. Maybe he did come to identify with them at some level. Perhaps he saw himself as a kind of noble adventurer offering himself and whatever skills he had to the taliban only to become disillusioned when reality bit.
I almost feel sorry for him. Almost. Except…that sort of like obama, it became about him. His father told him to follow his conscience. Too bad his daddy didn’t also mention some minor annoying things like loyalty and duty and responsibility to his comrades in arms and betrayal of country and oath.

As I write this it is around 11 am and the troops hit the beaches already 5 hours ago June 6, 1944. It was the end of the beginning. The Third Reich was dead but it didn’t yet know it. Our world would change forever.
So on this 70th anniversary of D Day, God Bless all those who gave their lives in her service. May we always remember to honor them. And God Bless our Country and keep her safe.
