The Years of Shame

Is it just me, or are the 9/11 commemorations oddly subdued?

Actually, I don’t think it’s me, and it’s not really that odd.

What happened after 9/11 — and I think even people on the right know this, whether they admit it or not — was deeply shameful. The atrocity should have been a unifying event, but instead it became a wedge issue. Fake heroes like Bernie Kerik, Rudy Giuliani, and, yes, George W. Bush raced to cash in on the horror. And then the attack was used to justify an unrelated war the neocons wanted to fight, for all the wrong reasons.

A lot of other people behaved badly. How many of our professional pundits — people who should have understood very well what was happening — took the easy way out, turning a blind eye to the corruption and lending their support to the hijacking of the atrocity?

The memory of 9/11 has been irrevocably poisoned; it has become an occasion for shame. And in its heart, the nation knows it.

Does Mr Krugman have it partially correct, all wrong, or all right?

  1. bz . . . I’m surprised you ask. Yes, Krugman has it wrong – again. The guy is determined to exhibit a contrarian position – as usual. Perhaps it gets him more press space.

9/11 had little or nothing to do with Iraq 1. It threatened Israel, not us. Then George W. Bush made a huge mistake when he initiated his “preventive war” that became Iraq 2.

When, after expending much blood and treasure, it became time to leave Iraq 2 our military experts switched priority with good old worthless Afghanistan. No one seems to know why? They certainly didn’t threaten us (or anyone else). And Bin Laden had already moved on to Pakistan anyway. Our search for terrorist guerrillas led us to close their (few) training camps in Afghanistan. We did so by sending the ENTIRE American military force to get them and Bin Laden. Interestingly, he and his followers were never in Iraq and only temporarily in Afghanistan.

Our former friends the Taliban were already gone from Afghanistan, and Pakistan was (supposedly) our good nuclear friend.

So we sent drones to finish off al Queda and Seals to finish off Bin Laden. It’s time to announce our victory and to bring home our war machine. . . Bump

  2. Krugman is a scum bag for stating this. What did he want, parades, clowns and fireworks going off? It wasn’t a day of celebration it is a day of mourning and remembrance.

He is wrong all all accounts, BZ.

  3. Well, I’ve got the lefties at my place now arguing he’s absolutely right…..
