California plant offers ‘toilet-to-tap’ water recycling

Cat On ToiletNothing like drinking your own feces.

From WMUR (New Hampshire).com:

SAN JOSE, Calif. —People in Santa Clara County, Calif., will get a new water source in the next few months, but some might not be too thrilled when they find out where it’s coming from.

San Jose children have been playing in recycled fountain water for years, but now, officials said, water that’s pure enough to drink is coming from the same place.

The source for Santa Clara County’s newest, cleanest and virtually limitless water is the sewage treatment plant near Alviso. Later this fall, pre-treated wastewater from the plant will flow into a new $68 million Silicon Valley advanced water purification center.

Though not funneled to your tap just yet, you can bet your bottom dollar that goal is just around the bend.

Hey, my feces just may taste wonderful.  And my confidence in government has never been greater.

  1. Kinda weird that it took a New Hampshire television station to break that earth-shattering news. I am NOT surprised however that it came from the west coast weirdoes. I don’t know how you normal people can stand to live there BZ.

  2. I am so glad I left California, it was too expensive, too liberal and nasty. People actually never flushed their toilets because the city told them that the only time they could flush their toilets was when someone did the poo.

So, if you visited a person’s house their toilets were full of people’s pee. I ALWAYS flushed, until one day, someone heard me flush and had a fit!! Unbelievable. Sorry, I didn’t care, I was not about to use the bathroom with someone else’s pee in it. Yuck!

Figures California would come up with something so disgusting… Ewwww…..

  3. Umm, sounds pretty delicious. But just consider. How often does tap water originate from open reservoirs? And just think about what might be in that water. Fish, water fowl, people swimming…and doing other things.

What a way to make a living.
        Have to hold my nose
From the sewage that you’re giving.
        We just take your pee
        And your poop
        (don’t you get it?)
        Treat it all
and give it back to you to drink it!

  4. I hate to break it to you, but unless your drinking water comes from a deep well, your municipality probably gets its source water from a river of some sort. If there is a city upstream of you, they discharge their waste water into that same river. You are already dealing with “toilet-to tap” water. You also need to remember that the water that you drink has been around since the Earth was formed, and has been recycled countless times after having passed through countless animals and people.
I ran a large waste water treatment plant for over 15 years. The modern methods of treating waste and potable waters are amazing at what they can remove from “dirty” water. The EPA and state agencies keep pretty close tabs on drinking water treatment, they’re more stringent about what comes out of your tap than they are about bottled water.

    • I’m sorry, that still gives me the “ewww” factor. . .and yes, I had heard some bottled water was nothing more than someone’s muni water. . .
