Two days ago we visited the Mendocino County Animal Shelter — as opposed to the Mendocino Humane Society — and came across a dog who, due to overpopulation at the shelter, had to live in the office. His name was Buddy. At first he growled at us because, after all, it was his office.
But there was something in him that just seemed to resonate with us. My wife said: “He would be a great dog.” He was a Fox Terrier / Jack Russell mix. I thought: now there’s a veritable uncontrollable whirlwind if ever there was one.
Two days later we visited again and took him for a walk. He was quite the gentleman.
Two days after that, we were called: we could adopt him.
Driving him down Main Street, he was already recognized by someone in a red VW. “Is that Buddy?” the driver asked. “I’ve walked him. Glad he got adopted!” Another person recognized him on a walk: “That Buddy? He’s a great dog.”
We had already adopted one dog from the Humane Society next door (back in May of 2009) — that was our dog Lilly, documented here. It turns out that, once we acquired her trust (took about two months, though), she was and is a great dog!
That said, it turns out that Teddy appears to be the anti-Fox Terrier. He walks well on lead. He is astoundingly polite. He hasn’t barked even once. We bought him a cat-bed and he’s already made it his own.
He’s already seemed to be making himself “at home” wherever we’ve been. We left the earlier motel where no dogs are allowed, and are now staying two additional nights at another “dog-friendly” motel with direct access to the ocean.
What an amazing little dog.

Yes, our dog “Chet” is a rescue dog and looks very much like Buddy. A little smaller, but the same atitude. I feel sorry for you! Terriers are little pricks and I hope you have patience! If you can put up with that Obama is NOTHING!
I’ll even go as far as to say that if you don’t wring his neck in three days it proves you are a Democrat!
Our dog Daisy found us. She has been a help for us through a rough time. They say God sends us a dog when we need one. All I can say is he picked the perfect dog for us.

Beautiful dog BZ, and a rescued one at that. We rescued a greyhound from the many local dog tracks here in Fl, and its really sad. The wife of course has a Chihuahua that rules the roost. Congrats BZ, great find my friend!

Rescue animals seem to know what you’ve done for them and they will spend their lives paying you back.

Tim: but here’s the gig with him — he’s already astoundingly polite. One of my wife’s dogs IS a terrier AND a prick, so I’m aware of that aspect. However, this guy, like I wrote, is apparently the anti-terrier. He’s not a jerk, he’s polite, sleeps like a champ — hell, we had to WAKE him up this morning. He waits for his leash, doesn’t beg for food. Maybe he’s only showing us his good side for now. . .

PD: there isn’t much of a story on him, that’s part of the problem. They thought he’s about 5 years old but he was a stray, picked up on the streets. He wasn’t an owner surrender. He’d stayed in the office for roughly a month. He was getting close to his “day,” so to speak. Lots of folks liked him but he hadn’t yet been adopted.

Anyone who loves dogs will love this story. I’ve had dogs as far back as I can remember and have many happy memories because of them.
Cool doggie…All of our dogs are rescue dogs. We rescued them off the streets, or out of the pound… 1 Belgian Shep. 1 yellow lab, 1 Rottweiler, and one little rat terrier or something…coolest dogs ever.
I was fearful at the start that you had lost a beloved pet and this was a memorial post.
…Wonderful to find it’s just the opposite! Our “Lucy” is a street find, and is the best four-legged-human in the world.
