An update on BZ’s Berserk Bobcat Saloon Radio Show for 2022

People have been asking, “BZ, what happened to your radio show? You used to be on three times a week (Wednesday included, with the SHAT Show), then twice a week (Tuesday and Thursday nights), then now — perhaps once a week, if that.”

In fact, I was entirely gone for three months. More.

The answer to “what happened” is: change.

A metric assload of change.

The same kind of change that has affected you all individually, your family, your business, your work, your entertainment, your restaurants, your stores, every bit of your life. Ever since late 2019, all of 2020, and all of 2021. And likely every bit of 2022. Because this crap is far from over.

I’m certainly no different, and neither is the SHR Media Network.

Shaun Lewis, at the final SHR Media Network studio in downtown Sacramento, with the new Arrakis board and Shure SM7B microphone, in 2018.

The two original owners and creators of the SHR Media Network are no longer involved. Shaun Lewis experienced a life-changing event which devastated his life, as did various knee injuries requiring surgeries. Moreover, SHR had to leave its studio because the owner was going to sell the house in which it existed — in the hot Sacramento housing market.

Sack Heads Clint (right), the other SHR Media owner, found himself wrapped up in work and had no time whatsoever for SHR, with the last SHAT Show — which was his last appearance whatsoever on radio — occurring on February 26th of 2020.

BZ and CLINT on the SHAT Show, in the original SHR studio.

I make this unequivocal statement: Shaun and Clint are never coming back to the SHR Media Network. We’ve spoken numerous times. It’s not going to happen. I’m still having a bit of difficulty dealing with that, quite honestly.

Making me — the interloper, the greenhorn, the luggage-carrier, the “new guy” from 2016 who only got a show in January of 2017 — now responsible for the future of the media network that Shaun and Clint themselves created.

CLINT, BZ and SHAUN in the original SHR Media Network studio.

So I had a choice.

I could either crash the network, kill it, gut it, rip it out by its roots — or I could try my best to continue SHR.

I’ve decided to try to continue SHR to the best of my abilities, whilst simultaneously recognizing the hard work accomplished by both Shaun and Clint.

First, I was thinking of changing the name entirely — to BZN.

Or I was considering taking a hiatus from internet radio.

Or I could simply build on what Shaun and Clint had started back in 2012, ten years ago.

That turned out to be my preferred course. Because I want to honor Shaun and Clint, then attempt to strengthen and escalate what they created, if I can.

There are, naturally, a number of hurdles in my way. The primary challenge is the technology required. I’m not called a Techno Luddite for nothing — though I am light years ahead of Clint, who is 175 years my junior.

I come from analog radio where, at least in Kalifornia, the Sparta Corporation ruled the day, as did turntables, VU meters, pots, reel-to-reel tape machines, metal editing blocks for tape, razor blades for editing, cart machines, terrestrial radio, a soundproofed editing room, custom boards, and radio stations beginning with either K or W.

Sparta Electronics Corporation radio console mixer. I found Sparta equipment almost everywhere I went in 70s terrestrial radio, except at KFBK, which had its own custom-built board.

Custom, bespoke KFBK board in the 1970s, with Joyce Krieg. Cart machines sitting on top of the board.

Same board, with announcer Ron Lyons at KFBK-AM. I worked with Ron Lyons at KFBK in the 1970s, before he went back to San Francisco with KNBR and then KCBS. Note the mic, an early version of the Shure SM7B, the five cart machines on top, master VU meter in the middle, and the cart rack storage at right.

KFBK promo for the morning drive Ron Lyons show.

This is how AM radio used to work in the 1970s, with the talent — in this case, Donald Rose of 610 KFRC in San Francisco — in an announce booth, and the engineer or producer in another, running the cart machines, tape decks, mics, and everything else. Look at all the carts in the revolving cart racks, and the multiple cart machines required for the show.

Don Rose’s KFRC engineer, Steven Rude. Note the complexity of the board, the window, cart decks, multiple carts. This was everything but simple.

Without a good engineer or producer, you’re toast. Oh, right. BZ has no producer.

So this “everything is digital now” thingie is kind of confusing for an Analog Guy in a Digital World.

But wait. There’s more.

The SHR Media Network left the downtown studio and found itself plunked down into the living room of my wife’s house in South Sacramento. There, the internet, if you can call it that, “provided by” Frontier, runs at this speed.

No. In January of 2022, I’m not kidding. You can get faster speeds by either dial-up — or two tin cans connected by string.

Frontier’s explanation is simply this: you live in an old neighborhood in a predominantly copper wire based area where the chances of us performing upgrades are twofold: slim and none. Why? Because most of the people there can’t afford really good internet anyway, so screw ’em.

Oh sure. We’re upgrading like crazy in new neighborhoods. Because those houses are at least $750,000 homes. But in yours? Nah.

So on Thursday, June 10th, 2021, Shaun and I moved the SHR studio from downtown. Shaun set the whole thing up in about two hours.

Shaun did his job, but Frontier couldn’t care less about doing its job, so I could no longer run streaming video of the show. Audio only. And audio only on a good day when Frontier deigns to not dump the audio stream — either entirely, or, off and on during the show itself.

Necessitating my having to chop up the show into two or three or four separate pieces, with lots of show missing in between. I’ve done that. You can see the posts.

But wait. There’s more.

I’m not staying in Kalifornia. Thank God.

In fact, I’ve already purchased a house in a free state (with a very soon-to-be-coveted 2.1% APR) where permitless concealed carry is lawful. And everyone hates Kalifornians. For obvious reasons.

The driveway of BZ’s new house, in the first days of winter, 2021.

Which means that I have to move the studio again. From downtown Sacramento, to South Sacramento, to the free state, about 950+ miles away.

This is something I hope to have accomplished by the end of January or February. Crossed phalanges. Frankly, it all depends on the ability of a moving truck to surmount the five mountain passes between Sacramento, Kalifornia, and New Town, Free State, a great distance, in winter.

Within that new house, I will have fiber-optic. Connections will not be an issue. But, because BZ is still a Techno Luddite, and there is no such thing as a Shaun nearby, BZ will have to figure out the initial connections.

So for a while, you can bank on the show being audio only.

Until either Shaun, Allen Thomas, Jack Alexander, Jeremy Hanson, or some other kind of “deus ex machina” comes down from on high and hooks me up to audio and back to live video streaming via xSplit — or perhaps even Streamyard, vMix, or OBS Studio, I’ll have to figure that out also.

Then, of course, I’ll have to find a live streaming host that won’t kill me because I’m politically Conservative. I won’t do podcasts or stale shows. I want to be LIVE at the time I broadcast. I can post the shows as podcasts later.

You can bet I’m never streaming live on either YouTube or Facebook again. At this point I’m looking into either BitChute or Rumble for live streaming. If you have suggestions, let me know.

Arrakis mixer on left, with BZ’s gorgeous Electro-Voice RE20 microphone.

Then I’m going to have to figure out if I wish to continue working with my Arrakis ARC Talk 8 Blue mixer, or hook up the Rode Rodecaster Pro I have sitting nearby in a box.

Rodecaster Pro mixer. Will it work for The Saloon if I do audio and video?

That’s a story for another day.

But I’m faced with another dilemma. I will no longer want to be associated with the state of Kalifornia, so I’m trying to figure out if I want to start a sub-network to SHR. Something similar to this, in order to celebrate the freedom aspect of the network.

I’m on the edge with regard to this. Do it or not?

My New Year’s Resolution for the network is this:

Ideally, my goal is to bring BZ’s Berserk Bobcat Saloon Radio Show back to two, two-hour shows per week, on Tuesday and Thursday nights — just like I was doing since January of 2017.

I was even toying with the idea of increasing the frequency of the show, from two nights a week to four or five nights a week — making it a one hour instead of a two hour show.

I’d also like to bring back the SHAT Show, on Wednesday night again — with a rotation of co-hosts — until I find one that works with me as smoothly as possible, as “Clint-like” as possible.

Maybe that combination will never occur again; but I’d certainly like to try.

I don’t think Money Talk With Melanie will return to SHR, because Melanie Collette is finding success on Newsmax TV — but I believe I’ll be able to keep The Wright Way with Shannon and Mike, Dave Milner, Southern Sense, The Liberty Cast with Earl Jackson, and perhaps even expand our hosts.

I very much would like to expand the SHR shows with more great hosts — perhaps with an eye to enticing LONNIE POINDEXTER to return, as well as RALPH J CHITTAMS and JEFF DUNETZ — if we can figure out more technology.

2020 was a huge challenge. 2021 as well. And I readily admit that I found myself massively distracted in 2021, didn’t keep my eye on the SHR ball, because of losing the downtown Sacramento studio, the problems I encountered with the South Sacramento studio, selling my house, purchasing another house in a free state, and wrangling the sale and cleanup of my wife’s house.

To everyone on SHR, for that I apologize. Life. It happens.

But once moved to my new digs, once my studio is up and running in a room entirely devoted to it, and once I get a grip on the various technological aspects of running an internet radio network in 2022 — I hope to bring consistency and even more excellence back to the SHR Media Network, such that people can count on shows, count on quality, and count on great guests and information.

My life is like your life — turned upside down, challenged, fairly uncertain, all the while trying to remain Semper Gumby. Not always possible.

But now you know my goals.

Now let’s see if I can achieve them.

God bless you all, and thanks for listening to the SHR Media Network, Conservative Media Done Right.

BZ’s Berserk Bobcat Saloon Radio Show, Thursday, 7-11-19 with KEN McCLENTON

Featuring Right thinking from a left brain, doing the job the American Media Maggots won’t, embracing ubiquitous, sagacious perspicacity and broadcasting behind enemy lines in Occupied Fornicalia from the veritable Belly of the Beast, the Bill Mill in Sacramento, Fornicalia, I continue to proffer my thanks to the SHR Media Network for allowing me to utilize their studio and hijack their air twice weekly, Tuesdays and Thursday nights, thanks to my shameless contract — as well as appear on the Sack Heads: Against Tyranny Show every Wednesday night.

Hour 1: BZ spoke to The Exceptional Conservative himself, KEN McCLENTON of TECN TV. We talked about radio, video, putting together radio broadcasts, Ken’s staff, and his having attended the DC rally “Demand Free Speech” on July 6th! No, Ken wasn’t there to serve the drinks; he was instead invited to speak at the DC event with Laura Loomer, Milo Yiannopoulos and more. We discovered that Ken was also banned from Twitter for two-and-a-half years. “If you haven’t been banned and you’re a Conservative you’re not doing it right!” Ken said.

Ken asked: “Conservatives: why are you asking Facebook to be ‘fair” when their entire interest is to destroy America, destroy the Constitution, destroy the flag and be a charter member of Venezuela’s future?”

Ken also postulated that there is no such thing as hate speech — there is only speech — and that the pussification of American is rampant.

And Ken insisted: if you like what you hear, spread BZ all around. Spread Ken all around.

Ken said that “we are at war for the conscience of America.” The Left is predicated on three things: steal, kill and destroy.

“We are not ashamed of the Good News of Conservatism for It is the Power of Liberation First, to the Republican, and then, the Democrat.”

Hour 2: BZ continued to speak with KEN McCLENTON, then we transitioned to the Ron Edwards Notebook, and thence into phone calls. And from there into regret over going digital. It will be the downfall of civilization. And much more. Give a listen.

Freedom Fest in Las Vegas, for SHR Media Network

Freedom Fest Logo 1Ladies and gentlemen, Freedom Fest 2016 in Las Vegas, Nevada officially wrapped up two weeks ago.  My apologies for posting this so late after the fact, but Life happened to intervene as it most certainly always does.

The Freedom Fest is typified as:

FreedomFest is an annual festival where free minds meet to celebrate “great books, great ideas, and great thinkers” in an open-minded society. It is independent, non-partisan, and not affiliated with any organization or think tank. Founded and produced by Mark Skousen since 2002, FreedomFest invites the “best and the brightest” from around the world to talk, strategize, socialize, and celebrate liberty. FreedomFest is open to all and is purely egalitarian, where speakers, attendees, and exhibitors are treated as equals.

And with that, the SHR Media Network was there — for the second year — to cover Freedom Fest 2016.

SHR MEDIAIt’s no secret that, many years ago, I was in radio.  I started in college radio at WWSU, then worked for other AM and FM stations.  I took any shift I could for any reason I could as many times as I could though few knew me.  After moving back west, I worked for KERS, KEG, KOBO in Yuba City, KNDE and KFBK in Sacramento.  I met Morton Downey Jr and, briefly, much later, a new guy from back east whom I knew was pitching a show.

Sparta Radio BoardThat was “back in the day” when radio consisted of now-primitive analog Sparta boards, a central VU meter, numerous pots, two turntables, a Shure or RCA microphone, two vertical Sparta cart deck arrays, cart holders, and production room editing conducted using Ampex reel-to-reel recorders on metal editing splicing blocks with either vertical or diagonal cuts utilizing razor blades and white splicing tape.

In May, after having corresponded with Sack Heads Radio owner Shaun on Twitter (@EdgeofLiberty) we met, had lunch, and he and co-owner Clint (@SackHeadClint) were willing to try me out on their radio media network.

I thank them for their confidence in me and, with that, I was taken in to the SHR Media Network team (@SHRMediaGroup), which includes two other very important members that I met whilst at the Freedom Fest, to include The Exceptional Conservative and The UnderGround Professor.

Hence my appearance at Freedom Fest on behalf of the SHR Media Network, because they quite closely mirror my beliefs and philosophies.

CnSQcFXUsAANy0OShaun (L) and Clint (R), the great nucleus of the Sack Heads Radio Show.

Both Clint and Shaun, co-owners of SHR Media, are talented, devoted, and have a passion for Conservatism, America, discipline, sacrifice, and the founding documents of this nation.  It also doesn’t hurt that they’re great friends and play off each other wonderfully.  They live by their motto, “Conservative Media, done right.”

Whilst at Freedom Fest, the SHR Media Network team, of which I am now quite luckily an emerging part — with luck — had occasion to interview not only a massive number of Libertarians — including the Chairman of the Libertarian Party itself — but supporters and freedom fighters too numerous to count.

But first, the drive; I had volunteered to transport the SHR Media broadcast equipment in my automobile to Las Vegas whilst Shaun and Clint boarded a Southwest 737.  That drive was a journey unto itself as I had never before driven to Las Vegas and opted to enter Nevada and then, from Reno, drive south on Highway 95.  Yes.  One of the most damned desolate roads I’d encountered.

Samsung Photos As Of 7-24-2016 355The miles rolled by as did the drudgery and the lack of pee and poo stops.  I was thankful I hadn’t had crab cakes and broccoli the night before or my customary tankard-o-cola to start the morning.  But I knew I was finally approaching civilization when the road opened from two to four lanes and I spied what appeared to be a very small private plane hugging the nap of the earth about a mile to the east.  How very odd and quite dangerous, I thought.  Then it Predator Drone, Prop Drivencrested a tall ridge and disappeared.  Once I passed the ridge there appeared to be an airport or some sort of installation to the east of Highway 95.  The next thing I knew there was a prop-driven Predator drone pacing me southbound paralleling 95, about 150′ above the ground.  It wasn’t a private plane I had watched vanish over a ridge.  It was a Predator drone and I was adjacent to Creech AFB, home of the USAF UAV-Logistic and Training Facility.  I can say this unequivocally: a Predator drone is larger and creepier than I ever suspected.

Because of a somewhat lethargic lack of planning on my part, it took me three passes around Planet Hollywood before I found somewhere to park.  I had apparently rather adroitly managed to completely avoid the proper place to unload my bags and equipment with the help of PH staff and, instead, parked in the voluminous and confusing public garage to the massive Miracle Mile Shopping mall (remember that word: confusing; you’ll see it applied again shortly).

Not knowing quite where the holy hell I was, I exited and walked from one end of the mall to the entire opposite side before locating the PH lobby.  I checked in, told them where my car was stashed and, after pointing and larfing vigorously at me because I could only have parked farther away if I’d stopped in Boulder City, they relented and disgorged directions to their valet service.  All went well — somewhat well — afterwards, having tramped around in 110-degree heat at my advanced and febrile age.

So endeth Tuesday, my driving day.  I had dinner at some forgettable Mexican food place because I could find it from my hotel room on the 12th floor.  The mall was confusing, finding my car was confusing and certainly the interior of Planet Hollywood was confusing as well.  Of course, that is purposeful because, as a gambler, the casino’s goal is to welcome you in, have you spend copious amounts of cash, forget about the time, and waylay you to another table or another locale in which to part you from your cash.  That said, it’s not just Planet Hollywood; it’s been the goal of every casino ever built.

Frankly, the room was great.  Spacious, a king bed, no smoking, lots of Judge Dredd memorabilia stashed around the room and in display cases.  The pièce de résistance?  A wonderful, deep jetted tub in the bathroom.

Clint & Shaun Enroute Las Vegas

Clint and Shaun enroute Las Vegas, as opposed to leaving Las Vegas.

Wednesday saw the arrival of Shaun and Clint, and we gathered the equipment from the back of the Kraut Kar in order to reassemble it in the rotunda of the Planet Hollywood mezzanine.  Ably aided and abetted by Valerie and Mim (shoutout to both!), we were able to — ahem — “liberate” and “acquire” what we needed.  Ahem.

Samsung Photos As Of 7-24-2016 379 Samsung Photos As Of 7-24-2016 380SHR Assembles the BoothBit by bit the booth took shape as we arranged tables, draping, chairs, signs, banners and the various accoutrements that comprise a burgeoning radio network.

The next day, Thursday, I had occasion to meet two unique radio personalities on the SHR Media Network — Ken McClenton, The Exceptional Conservative, and Dr Michael Jones, the Underground Professor.

Samsung Photos As Of 7-24-2016 393The effervescent, ebullient and ubiquitous Sir Kenneth McClenton at Freedom Fest.

Ken McClenton lives and broadcasts on the SHR Media Network live and direct from Washington DC, the proverbial belly of the beast, every Monday through Thursday from 9 to 11 PM Eastern, and 6 to 8 PM Pacific.  Ken is on Twitter @MrExceptional1.  Ken’s site says:

Kenneth McClenton is an Urban Conservative whose mission Is to spread the good news of Christianity, Conservatism, Capitalism and Constitutionalism throughout the world.  Devoted to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness, Ken believes that in order to save the United States, we must mutually pledge our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor to save Urban America.

Samsung Photos As Of 7-24-2016 395Ken broadcasts with Sackheads Shaun running the board, at the SHR Media booth.

Samsung Photos As Of 7-24-2016 521Ken interviews former presidential candidate Steve Forbes prior to the Bourbon Smackdown.  But wait; more on that in just a bit.

Samsung Photos As Of 7-24-2016 471Kenneth McClenton, The Exceptional Conservative.

Having never met Ken before, I must say it was a pleasure to encounter he and his wife.  They are two of the kindest and most considerate persons you would ever want to meet.  Ken’s laugh is loud and infectious (necessitating, later, a painful series of injections to counter same).  Truly, if there were ever a Great Guy placed on planet earth by God, it would be Ken.  And, of course, someone should ask Ken two extremely important things: 1) how he managed to acquire the moniker of “Kitten,” and 2) how the interview with Ali’s fight promoter, Don King, went.

It was my next pleasure to meet Michael Jones, the Underground Professor, whose site indicates:

Host Michael Jones comments on political commentary on current events, tidbits from history, comparative religion, literature, philosophic arguments, and scientific progress. Because while current events are important, UGP Radio is about more than entertainment and political intrigue. Our goal is to deliver a liberal arts education through a one hour broadcast every day. Each episode spans a series of subjects that will enable you to draw conclusions, rather than fuel you with talking points. Learn more about the Underground Professor at undergroundprofessor.us or catch him on www.shrmedia.com.

Once I met Dr Jones, I immediately understood why I overheard some of the Sack Heads personnel — specifically, the personal servants for both Shaun and Clint (Shaun and Clint travel with a retinue of three private assistants each) — say: “they look like twin sons of different mothers” in reference to myself and Dr Jones.

Samsung Photos As Of 7-24-2016 445Dr Jones, the Underground Professor, live at Freedom Fest (with Ken McClenton).

The Underground Professor, a frightening conglomerate of knowledge packed into his brainulus, can be heard on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays at 6:00 PM Central — and Sundays at 8:00 PM Central.  You can listen in at blogtalkradio.  Dr Jones can also be found, Saturdays, on WNJC 1360 Philadelphia, New Jersey, Delaware at 5:00 PM Central.

In all, a great and wonderful time was had.  On the wrap-up night, however, a rather interesting event occurred.  On the cusp of hosting the Bourbon Smackdown at the SHR Media booth in which persons of all stripes — vertical and horizontal — were invited, Steve Forbes ambled towards the booth having just spoken to a massive audience.  He was corraled by the UP and Shaun, whereupon he sat for an interview as documented above.

Shaun mentioned the upcoming Bourbon Smackdown and produced a glistening and pristine glass for Mr Forbes, introducing some Bookers into same.  Mr Forbes, not knowing who the hell we were at all, accepted the glass with grace and proceeded to speak to us and knock back some bourbon.

Please note the glass in the hand of Mr Forbes — a remarkably brave and courageous man.  His bodyguard was a rather nice (and attentive) individual as well, professional and unobtrusive.  We heaved a collective sigh when he decided not to Tase each and every one of us for handing his principal a glass of untested liquid.

20160715_200411Ken, tenuous, awaits the stinging barbs of a Taser gun, knowing the black guy would be the first recipient of any electronic ire.

Hello and goodbye to Art Bell

Art Bell's Dark MatterI used to listen to Art Bell (now 68) when I worked graves in Patrol, or occasionally to and from work on other shifts.  He primarily left terrestrial radio in 2007.

Now, Art Bell has returned with his show “Dark Matter” — one week ago — and is now only heard on Sirius XM radio.

Art Bell’s website indicates he broadcasts Monday through Thursday, starting at 7 PM Pacific.

Seeing that, I thought it would be a simple matter of visiting Mr Bell’s website and clicking on some kind of streaming audio link.

Not hardly.  Here is where the website indicates you should — can only — listen to Art Bell.

First, disabuse yourself of any of that “free” stuff.  You’ll not be listening over the internet — unless you wish to either purchase one of three Sirius radios from $57 to $80 (plus subscription), or specifically, from his website:

These are 2 ways to listen to Art Bell on SiriusXM radio, with a Satellite radio receiver, or on your computer or mobile device via the Internet, or both. Either one will also allow you to listen to many other SiriusXM channels. So the cost of a monthly subscription is spread across many other potential programming choices. The cheaper $14.49 a month “Select” subscription will include the channel Art Bell is broadcasting on, among others.

You want to listen to Art Bell?  At minimum, it’s $14.49 per month.  That’s $174 a year.

And so, with that, I say hello to Art Bell.

More pointedly, I say, goodbye to Art Bell.

You ain’t worth that much.
